COOPER MOUTH CANCER APPEAL - Raising Awareness
& Funds |
|
GEORGIA COOPER first had a lump and
one front tooth removed in March 2005, as
a day patient at a hospital in Nuneaton. Within
2 weeks the tumor had grown back in the same
place - only twice as big. It was at this
time that Georgia was transfered to Birmingham
Children's Hospital. Mr Sat Parmar, Maxillofacial
Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham,
operated on her on 5 May 2005 and removed
the tumour, most of her upper jaw and some
of the roof of her mouth.
Georgia now has five years to wait before
her specialist Mr Sat Parmar will give the
all-clear. In the meantime, she plans to do
all she can to raise awareness of mouth cancer
so that other children like her can be diagnosed
early.
Georgia said "I am very excited
about launching the Georgia Cooper Mouth Cancer
Apeal (GCMCA). I want to raise
some money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
We should all have regular check-ups."
Mum, Julie said “We really want
to tell parents to check their children’s
mouths and have regular dental check-ups.
We’ll do all we can to raise awareness
and point out that mouth cancer doesn’t
always occur in older people.”
Nana, Maureen said "We were all
very suprised, and very pleased that Georgia
did not have to have chemo or radiotherapy.
In some ways it is still hard to believe that
she had cancer at all as the treatment was
over so quickly and she bounced back to her
normal bubbly self so quickly. We realise,
of course, that Georgia is in remission and
will not get the all clear for 5 years, and
we all hope and pray that the cancer never
returns."
Georgia is currently wearing a plate with
very lovely new teeth on it. She may need
some kind of reconstructive surgery when she
is about 14 years old, and a piece of her
hip bone will be used to create a new jaw
into which some permanent false teeth will
be screwed. Below are photos taken before,
during and after surgery.
