I left a post in 'rather frightened newbie' but no-one sawe it so i am posting another notice for you all here,it wasnt that i forgot about you all,how could i.

Well it's been about 2 weeks now since dad had his op (8hr op) but you really wouldnt know he had had it done if it wasnt for his slurry speech ( even tho he is really good at it! )
and a nice big scar on his right arm.
That was for the skin graft for his tongue then they replaced that skin from the groin.
So far he has amazed all of us even his doctor! he has been sensible by not drinking alcohol ( a miracle for him trust me!) he has been resting, even more of a miracle,he has been great.
He got a bit worried today as he said some of his disolvable stitches on is tongue came out whilst drinking and a bit of the skin graft has come loose,so i dont know if that is normal or something to worry about ( so if you see this doc i would be grateful if you could let me know).
He had a few down days like the monday after the operation he was really down, mentally and physically,he had just had enough, but tuesday evening there was such a difference,by the weekend he was walking outside to the local newsagent!
I would just like to say a big thank you to all of you who sent me kind messages of support and have kept interest in me and my famly, you have been a great help for me both for educational purposes and emotional,i will deffinatly recomend anyone to come here if they ever feel like they dont know where to turn, you have all made me feel welcome to chat, ask questions but most importantly share my worries with you all.
Thanky you so much. Big Grin

HI Sucow, I am so glad to read your dad is doing well and that must be a great burden off your chest. You do not say if he is having Radiotherapy? Well all the best to you both.

Sucow, great to hear your Dad's doing so well.

I know exactly how he feels about having a drink (alcoholic that is).

I had my op September 2001 and whilst I doubt if I'll ever be """allowed""" to drink spirits again I have been sort of allowed to have a beer or two.

The spirits thing is a bit like smoking. What it comes down to is your own choice.

It's also good to hear you sounding so much more cheerful.

Here's hoping that both of you continue to enjoy life.

Disolvable stitches do come loose especially after two weeks Wink . By this time the skin graft should have taken. The looseness is probably a sensation of 'not tightness' as the hold of the stitches loosens as they dissolve and come out ( having done their job). Hope your dad wasn't trying to stick his tongue out at us Razzer . If you are still concerned, you dad should have a contact number at the hospital department that he can call.

He will slowly need to learn to speak and swallow again. Don't forget to get the help of a speech therapist for help with this. See the relevant links in the PATIENT'S GUIDE > COMPLICATIONS section.

Glad we are able to help Smiler .

Best wishes
Vinod :coffee:

Hello everyone been a while since i have posted anything on here but i have still been in and out Wink ...

My dad has just finished his course of radiotherepy and got to bring his mask home for a few jokes down his local! He is still doing really well, the skin graft on his tongue is no longer a problem it has taken nicely, he speaks much better now and is eating well.

He has to go back to the hospital every 3 days from next month for a few weeks to have his face massaged as it is swollen and because of the surgery 'something' isnt working anymore so he has to have all the excess fluids massaged to the right side of his face for drainage.

I cannot believe what a vast improvement he has made since seeing him a few hurs after his operation i was sure things would never be the same again but he has taken it all in his stride and came out not far from how he was before it all emerged.
How is everyone else doing? i hope your all well in whatever your experience has been/is
