Good afternoon from Ishbel-looking-in-glass-and wishing-there-was-more-of-her.....Basically I would love some advice to put on a bit of weight. I am 58 and still in the 'remission' category after being diagnosed with cancer of the larynx five years ago.
I went along to oncology familiar team after a year for, what I thought, was final check-up. But twas not to be. My main consultant wasn't quite happy with what he saw looking down with the thingyscope, went into hospital twice in past month, kept in overnight, for biopsies.
First lot were unproductive. Then a CAT on throat and the biopsies.
Last week's follow-up visit has left me in a bit of a state of confusion. Consultant said I was faced with two choices.
1. Have voice box irrevocable removed although they wouldn't know if it had been necessary until post operation.
2. Go for monthly check-ups at clinic to follow behaviour of bits showing 'abnormality' but not necessarily malignancy.

The only help I was given in making my decision(the consultant, like myself, said he would choose 2_) was that if I chose 1--the removal--I would be able to eat more!

As I have decided to keep my voice as long as I can I just HAVE to put on weight he said. Ever since the maximum amount of RT in 1999 eating has been a problem. Fair enough. Small price to pay. I blend and experiment but have developed a 'scunner' _Scottish word for 'distaste'-for anything too bland, including most supplements.
Chocolate and bread-=-apart from homemade croutons--are out. And all my really lovely soups
with delicate spices (anyone want a recipe, just shout) just do not add the ounces let alone the pounds.
Sorry for being so long-winded. So happy I have discovered this group. Manna. And thank you Krishan for instructions. Ishbel

Hi Ishbel,

Tips for putting weight on:ice-cream (whipped smooth),yoghurts, mousse (full fat!), custard, soups (cream of tomatoe has lots of calories!) cartons of ensure ( plenty of calories!) I can't eat properly and these are all I can swallow! If you can stomach full cream milk that'll help too!!

Best o luck!!

Dear Allan (I cant remember if it is one el or two) but thank you very much for the food tips. I like Ensure very much. Their coffee one actually, if you have a good imagination, tastes like Baileys if you have it ice cold!
While on the food still. Tonight I made something SO lovely although it has given me a bit of wind.
I cut up a couple of small swedes (after peeling obviously!) and boiled for 30 mins to make sure they were cooked; then blended thoroughly with good French butter, full milk and a pinch of mild curry powder. Really nice. One of my sons came round to see if I needed anything and helped to finish the pan cntents..
I'll probably have that every day now until I'm sick of it.
Thanks again Ishbel
