\I am 41 and i am a smoker, i have a persistent cough, had it about a year normally have a coughing fit in the mornings, feels like i have to clear my throat, feels like i have something at the back, my breathing and swallowing feels restricted and sometimes makes me sick, the past 3 months i am coughing alot more and my gland in neck just one side has come up about the size of ten pence, it is painless and has been there for 3months, can anyone help what the diagnosis might be, thanks cbeare
Hi Julia, Thank you, i have just brought Electric cigarette and it is great, so pleased to tell you i will be packing in the cigs from now, as i am concerned about the lump, i also have a appointment next wk for Gp, hopefully i will be just a swallon gland, you don't realize how important life is untill things like this happens to you, my love and thoughts go out to everyone on this site who has cancer, thanks CAT
The doctor might also be able to help you with other quitting methods. My own mom was hypnotized nearly 20 years ago and is still a non-smoker (must have been her time to quit).
Waiting for my own diagnosis was the scariest time in my life, and even now seven years on I remember that long dark tea-time of my soul.
If at all possible, please don't go to your appointment alone--you'll either need a shoulder to cry on or you'll want to "high five" someone.

what Julia said - all of it
Thanks Guys for your support,it is really heart felt to know the support is out there, i am staying positive, as i am quite emotionally strong, Thank you Cat,
I've come in a bit late, but echo everyone else. I smoked 40 a day until my diagnosis and then took just 2 weeks to quit altogether. It's awfully hard, but it is do-able. Use any help you can get, electronic cigarettes, patches, champix...whatever helps. Strangely, I don't even miss smoking a little bit. Good luck with the doctor
Just an up date, went to Dr's this morning, he has ruled out it being Thyroid problems, and has refered me to NT specialist, so fingers crossed, just a waiting came now, xx
Hi catbeare - wishing you all the best for your NT appointment, firstly hope it is soon, because the waiting is always bad.
Also what Julia said, having someone you can trust along with you to see specialists is good: they can hold your hand, they can also keep a clear brain and help ask the right questions. When one is scared, it is very hard to keep a clear mind. Having a list of questions written down before you go is good, too.
I stopped smoking the day I was told I had cancer, and drinking (although I do now drink 'reasonably', I'm allowed lol) - and frankly I didn't find it hard AT ALL, because my will not to worsen my condition was much stronger than my desire to smoke or drink. I do miss it occasionally - but not enough to start again. I'm sure your doctor can help you with ways to ease the pangs, though, if you need help.
Thank you so much for your support, it is nice to be able to chat about this to someone, my partner is great but at the moment i do not want him to worry, hopefully i am worring about nothing, i am trying to be positive, and most of that is thanks to you guys, i take my hat off to all of you, Thanks Cat xx
just an update my appointment is for the ENT on the 28th feb 2012
