I was DX with submandibular cancer and I now have to have radiation theropy starting on 4/27/2009. I had my salavary gland removed on friday the 13th of March. I am scared of what could happen. I have talked to my oncologist. I react to different things as to meds. If it is suppose to make you sleepy it makes me hyper. I am also nervous because I am near the mexican border. I hope the avian flu do not come into Az. I work at Lowes store as a cashier. I hope I am not exposed to this virus. We have a lot of mexicans legally come across to shop in the states. I hope they close the borders for a while.

I think you've probably got enough to think about without worrying about the flu.

Try to concentrate on battling the cancer and don't be afraid to come and ask questions on here.

There's a range of people here, from sufferers to carers to friends / relatives and it's not a bad bunch of people !!

I know what you mean about reacting differently - coffee makes me sleepy SmilerSmiler I would regularly wash hands and take normal precautions during flu time. Good luck starting the rads today. From what others say it build up on you so make sure you take care of yourself - good nutrition and use good lotions like auqaphor AFTER your rads. Let us know how it goes SmilerSmiler

Hi blacky,

Be sure to read all of the info on this site about skin care during rads, as well as oral care. Tell your doc immediately if you get mouth sores - thrush is common for us and your doc will give you a script for it.

Every time I heard the news today the numbers of those affected by swine flu go up and up. I'd ask your employer if it would be OK to wear a medical facial mask at work. Am sure it's of great concern close to the border (on both sides) and you don't want to take any chances. The first California cases have just been reported and a local grade school was closed today for a week while everything is sanitized. (A child who was in Mexico during spring break was diagnosed with swine flu a few days after his return.)

Better to be cautious while you undergo the stress and difficulties of radiation treatment.

Best of luck to you.

Mimi
