22 Year survivor

Hello everyone,my name is David , I have just discovered this website by accident and being a tongue cancer survivor I have found it very helpful. My story goes as follows.
In july/august 1987 I discovered an ulcer on the side of my tongue,of course I thought nothing of it being only 20 at the time. I went on holiday and at this time I met my future wife. Six months went by and after having a number of courses of anti biotics I went in hospital to have my tonsils removed. Instead of removing my tonsils they did a tongue biopsy. Then a week later came the news no one was expecting, they found a tumour and it was malignant and had to be treated straight away. After a lot of radiotherapy and a couple of doses of Methatrexate I was in remission.
The treatment was successful , but towards the end was very very painful. There has been a lot of tissue damage and also for the last six or seven years have had several operations for abcesses and in January 2009 I had a very bad stroke. This was another life changing experience which left me deaf in one ear and disabled. I still enjoy life with the support of my wife and daughter and the support of family and friends. I am back at work only part time , but its a start. I dont want to frighten any one , but 22 years ago there was no other choice. There is always somebody worse off and Ive had 22 extra wonderful years and may there be many more,

David.

Hi David
Thanks for sharing your story. It gives me hope for the future. I have just past the 6th anniversary of my tongue cancer diagnosis. I am working part-time and despite a limited diet my quality of life is good. Heres to many more years.

David,

Congratulations! Medicine was a little less sophisticated 22 years ago and yet you've made it so far. You must have had excellent physicians and facilities.

I'm going to be out of money in less than 20 more years and will be really really old. Yikes! I should be careful what I wish for.

You're quite a guy - I wish the very best for you.

Mimi
