I had tongue cancer in 1997 (I was 37 at the time.) I had surgery and part of the right side of my tongue was removed and a radical neck dissection. Now here I am 45 (I will be 46 on Feb 29, Leapyear)and I get the results of my biopsy next Monday. I think I already know the answer; the symptoms are there again-the sore on the side of my tongue which is extremely painful, the funny taste in my mouth, so on...

Hello cms
It is extremely worrying while waiting for the biopsy result and the mind keeps going through the scenarios (the worst being its favourite!). Let's try to be positive for until the biopsy says so, there is no diagnosis. Many members have had counless negative biopsies that have caused them great worry while awaiting the result. And if it is a cancer, your heightened vigilance should hopefully have got it early. Let's pray for a good result. My test came back positive. My surgery is scheduled for March 8. I have to get a PetScan on Thursday, and see an oncologist. I don't think the news has sunk in yet; I am trying to keep my loved ones up, not the other way around. I was prepared for this when I went to the doctor yessterday, maybe that's why I am taking it so well.

Hi cms, just wanted to say I know how you are feeling as I had chemo/radiation for Ca Larynx in Dec 04. Had all clear since until last month when CT showed it had come back but in my lungs. Treatment options not good for me hope yours are much better. But I do feel like you that I was expecting it whereas relatives are shocked by the news.
May the force be with you!! Sue |

Sorry to hear your news cms. I had surgery in March 2004 to remove tumour from left side of jaw, taking the bone, half my tongue plus radical neck disection. All the margins were clear but in July 2005 it came back and I had the operation repeated on right side of jaw. I recovered much quicker after second op. Try to use this time to get yourself built up - will you have a peg fitted? I'm hoping to get mine removed next week. We all send you our very best wishes for what you are facing and hope it helps to know that there's quite a few of us on here who know just how you are feeling and we are here to help in any way possible. Good luck. Brenda

Hi Sue Platt,
Your post has sparked my interest. First, I am so sorry to hear that your ailment has returned, this time in your lungs. You say you were given the 'all clear' until last month (January) when a CT showed the return. May I ask what symptom(s), if any, resulted in you receiving a CT at that stage. Regards, |

Hi Fridge, I did not have any symptoms but I thought a yearly chest x-ray was standard practise post treatment. When I asked my ENT surgeon for an x-ray before Christmas he said why do you want one, if the Ca has gone to your lungs there is nothing we can do so do you want to know!
In Jan at my next visit I mentioned the x-ray again and he said as it was over a year since I finished treatment he thought maybe I should have one. The x-ray showed a shadow so I was advised to have a CT. This showed multiple metastacies in both lungs. ENT man spoke with Oncologist who said in view of my age (49) and no symptoms and fairly fit she would offer chemo to try and halt the progression of the tumours. Obviously I now wonder if I had known a couple of months ago and treatment had started sooner would it have helped, but we can never put the clock back so what the hell I'm just gonna enjoy whats left! Having Cisplatin, big dose once a month for 4 months then review with CT to see if it has had any effect. Next dose due next Tuesday. Feel free to ask any more questions. Hope you are OK Kind regards Sue |

Hello, cms
Just wanted to wish you all the very best for 8th March - my thoughts and prayers will be with you. Like you I had a second tumour diagnosed last November (05) and had surgery 25 November. I was also very calm on hearing the biopsy results - I think I knew in my heart that the cancer had returned. It won't be much consolation, I know, but in some ways having been through the surgery before did help. Not beforehand, I just had this huge sense of dread before the op although mercifully I only had about 10 days to wait. However, once I woke up in intensive care, it wasn't all such a shock as before and I kind of had a rough timetable in my head of when the tubes would come out, when I would be able to get out of bed and when I would start to feel a bit better which seemed to help. I'm doing really well now - the tumour was in my cheek (previously in the jaw) and the flap taken from my arm has healed brilliantly. It's been tough but I am starting to get back to normal now and about to go back to work for a few hours per week. All my very best wishes to you - it's hard, I know, but I am sure you can get through this. As my nine-year-old daughter wrote would put it, lots of love, hopes and hugs. Sue E |
