Biopsy show SCC with well defined edges, which MD said was good if there can be any good anywhere in cancer. I go to see plastic surgery doc in less than 2 wks. The bumps cover little more than half my lower lip with some white spots inside too. I am scared to death and have no idea what to expect. What kind of surgery do they do, will I be totally disfigured or can this be somewhat corrected after removal with plastic surgery. I have no insurance so does that mean I am just screwed and have to live or not live with whatever happens. I go from being positive to crying my eyes out. Please if there is anyone on here to help, I need you now.

Hello Becky

The prognosis for a lip cancer is about the best it can be if detected early. The 5-year surval is just over 90%. The plastic surgeons are pretty good at geeting a good cosmetic result if surgery is indicated. Hope that helps you stop crying.

My mother had exactly the same thing about 15 years ago. She had a 'V' section of her lip removed. After the op I went to see her in hospital, there she was sitting up having soup and bread. She recovered fully, no need for chemo or any thing else. When the surgery had healed, it left a scar which was hardly noticeable. The only difference, she said, was that her mouth felt smaller.

You'll be fine, good luck.
