Hello All
Even though I'm a veteran of Tonsular Cancer I have just joined this site so I'm a newby of 20 minutes. I'm about to go through some more treatment to try and improve my speech. I am going to see an Ordontologist (don't know if I got this at all close) to see if it's possible to fit a false pallet. I've been told if it works it will help with some of the sounds to speak better. I would like to know if anyone knows of any website or if anyone can tell me what the procedure is. Your help would be appreciated. Regards Ratty |

Hi Ratty, I had a few attempts at having a false palate made but it didn't go to plan so I went for reconstructive surgery. The first obturator I had fitted worked well with the speech but the one they tried to do when my mouth changed didn't work out. If I could have opened my mouth more then the second one would have worked, but they couldn't make the mould for it properly with such a limited opening. Hagg.

Hi Hagg Thanks for your reply. It was very interesting. I've also got a problem with limited opening and have tried many things to improve it without much success so that might be my downfall. I have my first appointment this Friday so I might learn soon enough. Can you tell me a little about your constructive surgery. What did it entail, how long were you out of the picture work wise and more importantly did it work. a very interested Ratty |

Hi Ratty,
Speech problems are a balls!! My initial op was in 2006, three following and I'm still working on it! My therapist gave me an Ora-light regime to follow (spoon shaped implements are the best discription) and they have really helped. She actually used me as a case history in a seminar of therapists in Dublin recently. I have no problem, if you wish, of asking her if she would discuss my progress with your therapist if it would help you. I've also worked out a program of exercises for myself too. At first I could not move my tongue from behind my front teeth, now I can actually touch it too my back wisdom tooth. Yeah well it's not on the side of surgery, I'm still working on that one but it's a hell of a lot better than I used to be! Between the Ora-Light and my own stuff it's working! Let me know. I've gone from having an unintelible conversation and having to write everything down to sounding semi sensible!!! Mind you, if I'm in a bar some think I'm still pissed (whoops)under the influence. Thats their problem, lot's of people are audio impared, ha ha. SusieR P.S I don't have the option of a false palate, I've been told it probably wouldn't work, I'm stuck with trying to remember to sit up straight when I'm drinking so it doesn't pee down my nose so obviously sounds are the same, sit up straight and don't bend the head! If it gets really bad trying to make certain sounds/words I hold my nose!!!! This message has been edited. Last edited by: SusieR, |

Hi Ratty, I dont really do technical but basically, they pulled a flap of tissue from the side of my head (internally) down through a channel they'd cut in my cheekbone and then sewed it to the roof of my mouth.
It sounds a bit weird but it worked well and has totally corrected my speech. It was 10 days tube fed in hospital and then sorted. I guess it depends on the individiual and RT site etc on whether anyone could have it so I dont want to get your hopes up too much but if you need a more technical account there is bound to be someone here who can help. Hope that helps, good luck, Hagg. 12 years and still kicking it. |

Hi Susie Good stuff. I've only been a member a few weeks but what I've been told is either totally different to what I've been through for the same problems or exactly the same. I've been told everything inside of my mouth works fine it's what's not there that's the problem. NO PALATE. That's why they are now looking at giving me a false one which may or may not work. I'll find out on Friday and let everyone know what happens. Thanks for your reply Susie and I'd be very pleased to keep in touch and find out how you get on. Talk to you later I hope. Ratty |

Hello Ratty
Your specialist to fit the plate would be a maxillofacial prothodontist (one of the thngs I cover as an NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry). It appears that you are to be fitted with a maxillary obturator. Let me know how you get on.
