Hello to everyone, my name is Julie and my partner Martyn(41)has just been diagnosed with cancer of his Larynx. The outcome is that he will need to have his voice box removed next month,it has come as such a shock to us both as they gave him the all clear only a few month ago! They have now told him that the cancer is stage 4 and has spread to his lymph Nodes.
I can possibly imagine how he must be feeling.... Confused

Hi Julie,

Many people on this site know exactly what you and Martyn are feeling. I know you are still reeling from hearing the diagnosis and already you are trying to deal with the upcoming surgery on top of grieving over the gut-wrenching and unbelievable fact that cancer has invaded the person you love and count on. The initial fears, especially, are gripping and all-consuming, I know!

Okay, get ready for some good news...
My husband, Danny (52), was also diagnosed in Stage 4 (with lymph node involvement). (His tumor was at the base of his tongue.) Let me tell you Julie, late stage cancer CAN be dealt with successfully. Danny is now one year out (after surgery/radiation/chemo) and remains cancer-free. (I suppose the proper terminology is "he's in remission".) He is doing remarkably well.

Cancer is indeed life-altering... but there is hope. Having the voice box removed is certainly frightening and a major ordeal for your partner to endure mentally beforehand and physically afterwards. But I personally know a gentleman in his late 70's who is doing fine and adapted remarkably well after having the surgery your partner now faces. (At 41, Martyn's age is definitely in his favor as he goes through the surgery and rehab.) Hopefully other members of this website who have experienced the same type of cancer and surgery will respond to your message and share valuable information.

If you take on the role as caregiver for Martyn as he battles this disease, you will also need plenty of support... and this message board is a great place to share fears, frustrations, tips-suggestions, triumphs and miracles! Rely on all of us who want nothing more than to help you both through this significant life challenge.

My best to you and Martyn both. Stay strong together. I shall remember you in my prayers until you write and tell us he's cancer-free!

From my heart,

Melanie

Julie,

I realized after reading today's posting by you under the Laryngectomee Forum that this is not Martyn's initial diagnosis. You have both been through a great deal already, so I know this latest news is a particularly huge blow.

I do wish you both clarity of mind and strength in abundance for the best outcome possible.

From my heart,

Melanie
