Tongue cancer recurrence?

I don't know if I'm using this right but I hope someone will contact me who has tongue cancer. I was diagnosed in October 2007, I had a hemiglossectomy and neck dissection in November and radiotherapy in December/January. For the last 5 weeks I've had a sore area on the tip of my tongue and having seen the consultant yesterday he's going to do a biopsy next week to see if the tumour has recurred. I'm really worried, the thought fo having to wait 3 weeks to find out is driving me mad. Please contact me if you've been through the same thing.

Hi Anne

there are lots of people on these boards who have suffered a recurrence.Unfortunately with Oral Cancer it is not at all uncommon.Saying that we have a motto here."It ain't cancer till someone says so" so for now the only advice i can give you is try not to freak out,and get to know the guys here who will be a great support to you.

A recurrance is not the end of the world Anne loads of people have fought this disease more than once so don't despair.

Hello Ann

There are several causes for a sore tip of tongue. To help ease your mind, it is rare for a cancer to appear at the tip of tongue. A common cause for a sore tip of tongue is simply by the tongue rubbing against a tooth. Friction can trauma and soreness. Make sure that you are keeping your tongue in the resting position with no contact with the palate or teeth.

Do get your check-up and let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi Ann

I had a hemiglossectomy and resection just over 4 years ago. Last year I had a sore spot on the "good" side of my tongue and IMMEDIATELY my first thought was that I'd have to have another operation. Luckily it was an irritated tastebud and was all better within a few days, but still it scared me and my family. The sore on the tip could be nerve pain from losing half of your tongue.

Please let us know how things turn out. You're not alone.

Julia
