Hi, my partner was diagnosed with tonsil cancer with one lymph gland affected. He has under gone two sessions of chemotherapy and has one more to go through this week. Each session lasts for five days. What I can't understand is why he has not had his tonsil removed. It seems that all the information I have read involves removal of the lymph gland and tonsil.

Hello Popee

The best person to answer your question would be your partner's oncologist. Chemotherapy is often used to shrink a cancer before surgery.

Let us know what you find out.

Best wishes

I, too, had scc of my tonsil with 2 lymph nodes involved. However along with the chemo I had radiation which burned my tonsils away. Not sure why they would do just chemo without either radiation or surgery but it may well be as Dr. Vinod said. Hope they explain it to you in more detail, soon.

Thanks for welcoming me to this forum. I have been extremely busy of late and never got around to see if I had received your relies. I have recently spoken to my partners key worker and it would appear that because his lymph node was 4cms and attached to the tonsil cancer they were unable to remove it at that stage. They were hoping to shrink the Lymph node with the chemo which has now happened. On the last scan it was 1cms. The cancer had also spread to the soft pallate and across to the ulva "(I think that is what it is called.)". So by cutting away the tonsil it would then leave the remaining cancer that would still have to be treated with radiotherapy.
My partner Garry, is now coming towards the end of his radiotherapy treatment, with just six more sessions to go, out of a total of 33. He is feeling very weak and his skin on his face ,neck and ear is dark and burn't. He is now feeding only through his peg as he is too sore even for water some of the time. He has lost about two stone in weight as it is a battle to get enough of the ensure into him as he constantly feels sick or his belly hurts.

Hi! Popee,
Boy a lot has happened since your first Post and I am sure if you read some of the other members posts you will have your queries answered as most of us have gone through similar trails and trials so have a read and I am sure you will feel better after or at least have more of an understanding of the situation.
All the best and it is important to be by Garry's side during this ordeal as was my case my lovely wife Deborah was the best treatment that I could get.

Thanks for your kind advice Trev. I have read quite a lot of information over the last week and I am so glad that I have. It has helped me to realise that what Garry is going through is quite normal. It is very intense treatment that you are given and all the horrible side effects, weight loss etc is the result of the treatment not the cancer getting worse. With just a week to go until the end of the treatment any information available to help regarding the post radiation weeks will be appreciated.
