Hi everyone Well, here it goes Upon learning about HPV and the correlation of mouth cancer Ive started to suspect that I might be developing cancer due to symptoms. I have some growths in my mouth(which I assume is probably HPV related) one in particular is on my throat behind/above my uvula I first noticed it in my mid teens it appeared to be a red oval and smooth now that Im in my mid twenties the growth doesnt appear as oval shaped another is located on the 'floor' of my mouth (under my tongue) but has retained its oval shape Another problem is that I dont have money for treatment let alone a proper examination My question is what kind of life expectancy should I expect? And what can I do to prevent complications N

MrMister, If you are expriencing symptoms symptoms what kind? Does your mouth hurt at all? I have had Squamous Cell Carcinoma since November of 08 and my tumor was around for about a year and a half before I got diagnosed it kept getting more and more painful as time went on and then spread to my lymphnodes. I have had 2 surgeries and radiation. This past november I was diagnosed with mestasis to the lungs. I just completed my second round of chemo. I was always told no one is turned away for not being able to pay. You should be able to go to some type of health clinic for low income people if you do not have insurance. My sister did that when she was pregnant and she only had to pay 12.00 to see a dr. So if you are really concerned get checked. No one can tell you a life expectancy. I was a stage 2 in 08. I am 32 years old and just told in November I am a stage 4. But that still doesn't matter it depends on the fight and how you deal with it. My dr said chemo alone will only give me two years. But he plans to keep me around until he retires in 20. I plan to be around a lot longer myself. I have to boys I would like to see do lots of things. I lost my mom when she was 55 so I don't plan to miss anything no matter what. I have a family member that has had stage four cancer for 4 years. So goes to show you it is never a definite time frame its up to the person. Any other questions feel free to ask, but I suggest being see asap. Pam

Hello N As you can see from the time, everyone in England (where the majority of members are), would be asleep so it will probably be a few hours before you start to see any action on the forums. Self-diagnosis is not highly recommended and if you have had the signs you mention for some years, it would surely be unlikely that you have to start worrying about life expectancy etc. Maybe some life changes might be in order if you do in fact have HPV. My advice would be to try to relax, do what you can to see a dr for his/her opinion and then go from there. Hopefully you are worrying unnecessarily. Someone with more knowledge than me will come along before too long to help with your query. Keep us posted. Take care Deborah

Hi N I know that it's REALLY difficult, but Deborah gave you some great advice--try to relax. You might want to start by contacting your local health department to see if they could steer you to low cost or free clinics in your area. The first doctors I saw were at a clinic that specializes in the un- and underinsured, run by a local Catholic hospital. They sent me to a teaching hospital; they had a charity care office and I was accepted and all of my treatment there was covered. As far as life expectancy is concerned, no one can answer that. I'm very nearly five years post-op and cancer free. My doctor told us "I've never lost anyone to this (i. e., stage 2 tongue cancer)." Please let us know how you get on.
