Hi everyone,
I have joined this list on behalf of my brother-in-law who had radiation for throat cancer in 1997 after first having his tonsils removed. He is my wife's twin brother and he is 56 years old. I have just read that patients receiving large doses of radiation to the head and neck regions should be be checked for hyperthyroidism for the rest of their lives because they are at great risk of developing hypothyroidism and/or throid tumours. Does anyone have any evidence of this? He has never been checked for thyroid levels. My brother-in-law has since suffered a heart attack and he now has hyperthyroidism. He also now has dry gangrene in his fingers, the hospital appear to have given up on him, and I just want to help him and my wife Tina. Thank you Regards Ken |

Hi Kenneth
I am not an expert on this. I am sure that if any of the board members have experienced this, they will let you know. You should speak to his doctor or radiation oncologist for answers to the questions you pose. You may find the information at the following links useful: Cancer Medicine e.5 Section 40. Complications of Cancer and its treatment 155. Endocrine Complications. Scan the material by the headings until you find something of interest or possible relevance (e.g. hyperthyroidism , radiation, etc.) This link to Cancer Medicine e.5 Section 40. Complications of Cancer and its treatment 149. Cardiac Complications may be of passing interest. Cardiac complications can sometimes occur if there is chemotherapy involved or direct irradiation of the heart. Hope that helps. Thank you Vinod,
I shall be visiting my brother-in-law in hospital today so I will ask to see the consultant. My wife is distressed because when she visited him yesterday and was talking to one of the registrars he asked her if the family wanted my brother-in-law resusitated in the event his heart stops. I think an hospital corridor is not the place to be given this news in view of the fact that we hadn't been given a prognosis yet. Regards Ken |

Kenneth, I'd love to know which hospital talked to you in a corridor! It certainly wouldn't of been James Cook!!!!
