I have recently been referred to an oral surgeon about a v. suspicious 'patch' on my tongue. I have had it for over 3 months. It is like a mouth ulcer that has not healed. It is about 1/2 cm in length, white around the edge with a hole in the middle. It doesn't hurt unless I am talking or touch it and the pain goes to my ear. I am very frightened. My appointment came through v. quick. Next wed, 7 days after my initial visit to my GP and although this is good I also feel that my GP must have thought it urgent. I am wondering what the docs at the hosp will do. I assume they will take a biopsy - will this mean cutting away part of my tongue? Please can someone reply x

it is good that your appt is being done very quickly.i would have though that they will take a tiny piece of the ulcer for a biopsy.you may be a little sore after.hopefully it will be nothing to worry about.all the best shirl

Hi SW

A lot of us on this site know exactly what you're going through. I can really relate to the ear pain--mine felt like someone had plunged a letter opener in.

When I had my biopsy, the doctors took a very tiny piece from the underside of my tongue.

You're not alone in this.

Thanks for your replies. Although I don't wish tis on anyone - it's nice to know I am not alone. I guess the thought that I could have cancer has really shocked me. I'm trying to carry on as normal, going to work, etc but I have never felt so frightened. I am only 35 with two small children who need me so much. I will let you all know the result next week. Ihave one more question - how long does it usually take to get the results from the biopsy back - I hope it's not too long. Thanks again xxx

Hi

I don't recall how long exactly it took to get my biopsy results back, but I had surgery 16 days later. You should take someone with you--parent, partner, friend, somebody--because you're sure to have questions and they might be more likely to grasp the answers.

Hi,

I had my biopsy results one week after the sample was taken. Your consultant should be able to confirm this when you have your appointment.

This is not easy for you waiting and worrying but it's good that things are being dealt with quickly.

Good luck

Hi SW, it took 2 days for my biopsy result and I had my first op a week later. The advice about taking someone with you is really good. Good luck and all the best. Hagg.

hi SW,

Its good that they are getting down to it quickly, we know what you are going through and i'm sure most people would agree it's best to get the biopsy/results as soon as possible! I got my results about a week after my biopsy. the biopsy itself is as others have described, just a small piece taken away, it'll hurt a bit after but you will be ok! good luck and be as positive as you can. we know what you are going through.
