my cancer started on the back part of my tongue were you couldn't see it, but was of a fair size. It spread to my tonsils, down along my voice box, down my lymph knodes in my neck all thte way to the bottom ogf my neck before I caught it. It was stage 3 or 4 out of 4 stages.
I was given cysplatin chemotheraphy at the same time as radiation. Once these treatments were complete they did a partial neck disection on me. It has been 2 years and so far no reoccurence. I don't know if it makes a difference with the cancer being under the tongue verses at the back of the tongue. They said older people couldn't handle the cysplatin chemotheraphy because it is to hard on them. I couldn't handle it for very long before my white blood count dropped to dangerous levels. Apparently I had enough to help me. |

Hi Amanda,Sounds a bit like my husband Ray,He had a sore place top and under side of tongue at the back,He was diagnosed with cancer and surgery to remove the part of tongue that was affected,They also perormed a neck disection to check the lymph nodes,it turned out traces were found in the lymph nodes so he's just completed 6 weeks of radiotherapy,He had a bad time for about 3 weeks latter radiotherapy treatments and for 2 weeks after, but he is now almost back to normal able to speak without pain and eat normally again. So we are hoping that is the end of it.I do hope your husband will be ok.

Hi Amanda. I know how scared you are. My husband has tongue cancer, diagnoised Oct. 2000, and I am his care giver. His was stage 4 and he opted for chemo and radiation. It was a hellovaa hall, but he is teaching and coaching. The one thing I learned is that I don't have any control over the physical. I have total control of the mental. I focus on doing the best I can to take care of him and I make sure I save some time for me. I didn't at first, but I found that when I take care of me I take better care of him. The most important thing you can do is just let him know that you love him and your both a team. My husband told me it meant so much to him to know that we would go thru this together, not by just doing it but by telling him. I'll pray for both of you.
