My mum has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. We don't know how far it's gone yet as she only had her MRI scan today.

The procedures she has to face, albeit with dad's, mine and my brother's support seem absolutely horrendous to me.

I don't know why I logged on here, but I feel I need to be able to spout off to people who KNOW what it's like.

She's a non smoker, non drinker, clean living, healthy eater who has taken regular exercise and still at 75 yrs, goes dancing twice a week. It seems so unfair.

We will face whatever has to be faced together, but it just makes me so sad.

My thoughts are with your mum, your family and yourself right now.
Cancer is AMAZINGLY unfair.
The treatment to come will probably be hard going on your mum. We all on here had difficulties to face. But there is always help and support on here for you all.
If your mum is positive and otherwise healthy she stands the best chance.
Welcome to the board Winnie!

My boyfriend has tongue cancer. We found out in Dec. 2006 and he has finished treatment in Early March. We just found out today that his tumor didnt decrease very much and the doctors are considering two options. Catheter radiation to the tumor or major tongue surgery which he would lose all of his tongue. He is diabetic and has a j tube and he will be 38 in May. Very bad situation. If he wasn't diabetic, he may not have all the problems. I hope things go better for your mom. It was kind of sad to take him to radiation and chemo and most patients were older and he is only 38 and people thought he was my father and I'm 32. I was on the computer trying to find out about tongue surgery when I found this website of support.

I was 28 when I started RT. Everyone else there was a lot older than me. It was a bit strange.

Winnie stay strong and positive. Your mother sounds healthy otherwise so that will help her thru treatment.

My Dad went thru the treatment 35 rads and 3 chemos) last year at age 69, for base of tongue and neck nodes. He's now 70 and just had ND surgery. We met a man 72 and got thru it also.

Find out what treatment they are suggesting for her and weigh it all out. We too were very scared and sick after reading up on it.

Ask your mother what she wants to know before you fill her head with stuff and be selective on what you read online. Best info is from forums like this one here. And talking things out will be helpful for you too.

Hey my Dad is now cancer free and doing well. So just stay tough!

If you have any questions feel free to ask here or email me.

Take care,
LisaB

I'd agree with that. There is a lot of misinformation out there that is way off the mark. This is definately the best.

Hello Winnie

The evening after my husband had been diagnosed, I found this site or I think it found me. I logged on about 11 pm and read everything, eventually went to bed at around 5.30 am. Reading some of the stories gives you lots of confidence, there are lots of incredible people out there who have had a lot worse and have come through it smiling.

I hope, like me, as well as getting answers to your questions (straight from the horses mouth as is were!) You will find solace and comfort from the caring people who are ready to reach out to help and support you.

Let us know how you and your Mum get on.

Be strong and be positive

Love
Angie xx

its a horrible feeling when you get told news like that. My dad is going threw it all now. I always think why him, when there are people out there rapist, murderes etc who derserve to be suffered. When you do get the results though it is upseting and if she has got it then keep strong and the nurses and doctors will do everything they can, they are brilliant.
