Hi all...This is my first time here. It has been a long last few weeks for me. I found a white spot on my tongue a few weeks ago. It has acually been there for 4-5 months but it started hurting last week. I went to an oral surgeon and he will do a biopsy on May 22nd. He said I have no swollen lymphnodes and he thinks It might be Candidas (too many antibiotics) but I don't think so. I am worried. Been a smoker for 16 years and I am going to QUIT smoking on Sat. May 20th. That is scarier than the diagnosis! Glad to find this site!

Hi Laurie...

Try very hard to focus your thoughts on what the oral surgeon has told you thus far... (He must have valid concrete medical reasons for suspecting candidas). Please remember, there can certainly be other explanations for the spot on your tongue besides cancer. It's smart that he will be doing the biopsy (especially considering your history of tobacco use). Obviously he is being careful and thorough, which is a very good thing.

It is human nature to worry... but don't let it consume you between now and the day biopsy results are in. TRY to quiet your negative thoughts.

Now, I feel compelled to respectfully take issue with one statement made in your post. If I understand correctly, you said that smoking cessation is "scarier than the diagnosis". Are you referring to a diagnosis of candidas or cancer? I HOPE not the latter, but, if so... let me enlighten you... NO WAY is tossing out your smokes more difficult than a diagnosis of cancer!!! To give you the benefit of the doubt... I'll just assume you did not intend to imply such a thing...

About the smoking... Why even wait until Saturday? If you have indeed made the decision to quit... do it RIGHT NOW! Yes, it is difficult... but please consider the thoughts and fears you are experiencing this very moment about your white spot ultimately being diagnosed as tongue cancer... It's an awful feeling to wonder if smoking has caused a malignancy, isn't it? Let that be your motivator.

So... I do hope and pray that the smoking stops NOW... not Saturday... and that you never pick up another cigarette as long as you live. If you need help... call your doctor immediately and ask about products that aid in smoking cessation.

Please know that I (and others on this site) will all add our positive thinking energies to yours. I'm glad you found this message board too. Hoping you will soon be told ALL IS WELL and that, in the days upcoming, be able to find some degree of mental peace as you await the biopsy and results.

Fill your head with only good thoughts and TRY to keep others at bay. Focus 100% on giving up the smokes. (Do get help if you need it.) Smiler Let us know how you're doing.

From my heart,

Melanie

Melanie,
Thank you so much for your response. I am going to quit smoking because this has scared me pretty bad. I just called the Dr. to ask him about some help. I know I can't do this on my own. I will return and hopefully with good news about my biopsy! Is it normal to have pain with this?

Laurie...

Just wondering how things are going for you. I assume you've had the biopsy and are now holding out for results. That's always a troublesome waiting period. Hope you are not letting negative thoughts get the upper hand. Easier said than done, I know... but try to fill your head with only the images that make you happy and be extra good to yourself in the days ahead. I am hoping that you've conquered the smoking habit... and are coping okay as the poisons leave your body.

Post a note when you can so we'll know how you're doing. Please know your online friends are wishing you the BEST!

From my heart,

Melanie

Hi Robert,
I have not got my results back... I go in on Friday for an appointment for a follow up on my spot. If it was Cancer I am sure they would have let me know by now. They cut out the spot and there is no pain. I have had some raised blisters and cold sores on the roof of my mouth. They popped and it is just raw. The dentist said it was probably a side affect from my having quit smoking. Been over 2 weeks so I am real proud of that. Hope to hear back in a few days. I will let you guys know. I am here a lot. In fact, I joined Quit.net (got it off
this site) and it is a great stop smoking support site.

Hi all!
Got my results from my Biopsy and......NO CANCER! WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I called him today (I could not wait till Friday) He said it was probably Candidas (Fungus) When I see him tomorrow we will talk about it..
I am just so blessed to have found this site and to have read all the storys and the people on here are wonderful. The quit smoking site has just absolutly SAVED me." I got that site off of here." I am not sure where I would be another 5 or 10 years if I had not quit smoking... probably getting another Biopsy or an MRI. I feel like just reading all I have here that I will be back to continue to read as a reminder to myself what I was feeling these past few months. To know I am FREE OF TOBACCO...feels so good! I have Melanie to thank for being one of many that knocked some sense into my head! Thanks all and god bless you!

Well done Laurie, both on the result of the tests and on your firm resolve to say goodbye, forever, to the noxious weed.

I would have breathed this sigh of relief earlier but for the antics of a moron in a JCB digger who took out the phones of most of north County Dublin and all of County Meath.

<In Ireland they frequently hear you scream.>

Seriously, good news and keep up the non-smoking. I think it only fair to warn you that the urge does not go away completely. I gave up in 1983 and I still crave for a ciggie (very occasionally, and, not surprisingly, not at all since diagnosis cancer)

Best regards,

Robert
(Mad as a box of frogs-but sighing pleasantly this evening)
