I had an appointment with the maxfacial clinic today,(for my son)The main consultant was away,I went to see another doctor (it was her first day)My son has a lump on his hard palate taking up nearly the whole of one side,She had an xray done to make shure there is no tooth growing wrong and causing the lump, she said that the teeth are ok and that the lump just felt fleashy (her own words)And that it is rose coloured and not to worry,He has started to have nose bleeds minimum of one a day sometimes it can be 3or 4 ,I told her of this and she just said that children often do have nose bleeds and not to worry,I am just worried sick,They didnt take a biopsy or even a blood test,Is the only way to tell if its cancer or not by having a biopsy, thankyou for reading this and any advice will be very gratefull.

Sheila how worrying not to feel reassured by your visit. When I first attended the ENT clinic I saw a doctor who was not the consultant. He was very very quiet and I felt alarmed that he had no idea what it was. He used the scope to examine me, felt my neck and said he did not know what it was. But he did order an FNA - fine needle aspiration for later that day. A week later I saw the consultant and was told it was SCC. However I doubt I would have seen even the first doctor if my own GP had not asked for a full blood count. That blood count test revealed inflammation, which my GP said could just be my arthritic neck. But he erred on the side of caution and got me an ENT appointment straight away when I told him I felt so tired all the time. My advice is go back to your GP and get a blood test done to begin. By the time that is done and you get the result a week will have probably passed. In the meantime continue to observe the lump and if it is still as bad or worse in a week ask to see a different specialist at a different, but perhaps near hospital. You can I believe demand to be seen in 2 weeks if you have a strange lump. My husband has just asked to see another specialist elsewhere as he was not happy with the specialist he saw about his gall bladder and he now has an appointment at another hospital, but in the same county. Try not to worry too much as you will transfer that worry to your child and he will fret more than he already is. One other alternative might be to get a dentist appointment.

Hi Shelia I can sense your worry for your son. Please ring the department and explain your worry and ask for an apointment asking to see the consultant. I doubt you will be turned down. Any consultant in this business will tell you that they would rather their patient to be a pain and be reassured than find out later that something was missed. We all wish to get it right.
