Lump in neck

Hi Vinod

Back in May I noticed a lump in my neck. The same side as I had the tongue cancer and neck dissection. I went to my consultant and he didnt seem to have any concerns. However the lump is still there, its about the size of a pea, it doesnt hurt to touch and it moves about under the skin, it is located about an inch from the bottom of my neck. I am not particularly worried as my consultant didnt raise any concerns back in May, but was hoping that you could give me some advice or reassurance?? I am due to see my consultant on the 23rd Jan. Would really appreciate some advice on what to look out for when I have lumps in the neck. Thank you.
Clare

Hello Clare

It is probably a lymph node. Your treatment should have got all the cancer cells. But keep an eye on it. If it gets sore, larger or fixed, get back to your consultant and say so. But don't keep feeling it all the time as that would irritate it!

Best wishes

Hi Clare,
I've had a radical neck dissection too. I don't think it's an enlarged lymph node (in my humble opinion). A neck dissection involves the removal of a whole load of them down the side of your neck from behind the top of your ear to the top of your sternum as well as beneath your jawline.
Having a lump is a worry - I'd insist on being examined again with a CT scan no less. Don't trust ultrasound to be accurate. Also they could take a sample from it using a fine needle (FNA).
Don't sit back and worry yourself (as we all have done at some stage).
You deserve better than to wait until the end of january to be seen again. Tell them to get it sorted!!. You owe it to yourself girl.
Good luck!!
