I think by now some of you know I am not some kind of crank so at last I will ask this question. In the months preceding your cancer diagnosis did any of you experience suddenly waking at night and seeing apparitions or faces hovering over you?

Dear Pauline----Only when I hadn't put enough water in it! Seriously though. No. No warning apart from constant tiredness, mood swings, loss of voice until third morning cup of tea. Interested to hear what others have found. Ishbel

LOL - it really was a serious question. In the 9 months or so before diagnosis I often awoke with a start in the middle of the night and saw faces hovering nearby me. Often I would feel very strongly that someone had walked over my grave. It was a very creepy uncomfortable sensation and I am sure was not a dream. I know what I saw and the frequency of this happening. They were not good vibes. These happenings disappeared once I had surgery and radiotherapy. I am curious if I was alone in such an experience. People are reluctant to discuss such strange things for fear of ridicule. But the fact is I did experience this and wonder if anyone else has had similar uncomfortable feelings. Maybe it was a body reaction to the fact that all is not well. Feel free to private message me on this if you don't want to discuss it here.

Hello Pauline--Sorry, I was being just a bit facetious I know. I bad habit of mine, especially when I am trying to escape from reality. Reality at the moment being to try to avoid the bailiffs who are chasing me for four parking fines incurred when I was having radiotherapy and parked any old where. We are talking 1200 here and they are completely Dickensian in their methods if you let them over the threshold. It is not the most ideazl situation for a cancer patient trying to avoid stress is it...mind you, it takes the mind off the big C. Back to your apparitions. My advice would be to write a full description of what happened to the Department of the Paranormal I think it's called, at Edinburgh University, set up with a huge grant from the late Koestler. They are in the business of collecting data on everything like this which we can't explain. and would probably be able to tell you of some similar experiences to yours. Regards Ishbel

Hi Ishbel Some internet research I've done suggests this might be "sleep paralysis". A google search on that phrase gives plenty of pages which decribe the experience I have had. I also recall something similar happening to me once in a room abroad when I was about 20. I remember the incident becuase my friend thought I was nuts when I told her there was a man in the room behind the hotel room vestibule!!! It also seems that people have experienced this at least once by their early 20s. I feel very happy with this explanation as it has bugged me for months. The descriptions are so like the experince I had of sensing something evil in the room. I fell all is explained now. Sorry to hear about your fines. I would have replied sooner but I have been off colour all week with the dreaded oral thrush.

Hello Pauline--Oh I am glad to find that you have shed some information on these apparitions. K still think it would be very intersting to get on to the website of the Institute of Parapsychology, through Edionburgh University links, and they'd be so pleased to add your experience to their notes. Sorry about thaT HORRIBLE ORAL (sorry caps) thrush and hope it's cleared up now. I have started taking echinacea to hopefully build up my immune system. All the radiotherapy just killed the tissues which protect that region and I am prey to every germ going. What a lecture I had from my daughter about the parking fines. Role reversal takes some getting used to! Regards Ishbel
