Worried SickGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
Hi, I went to my PCP because of a smooth, bluish, purplish bump on the right side of my soft palate and he referred me to an oral surgeon. My dentist also referred me to an oral surgeon. The bump isn't all that big, but I can definately feel it with my tongue and it's visible just by looking in my mouth. This past Tuesday, I had a biopsy done and I get the results back this Tuesday, the 21st. My doctor told me that 90% of the time these kinds of things are harmless and the biopsy is just to be sure that everything is ok. Is it normal for a bump to be bluish like that? Am I worrying myself sick for nothing? Thanks for your help, Nancy

Hello Nancy A quick word before i go off to Hyde Park here in London for the Mouth Cancer walk this morning: Trauma can cause a bluish lesion. Negative pressure (caused by sucking hard with the mouth) can also do this as the ecchymosis in the area of the soft palate resolves to look bluish. So there are other things that can account for the lesion. Try to relax as there is no point worrying as it could very well be an 'innocent'lesion. Hope that helps. Hi Nancy, I know it is a very worrying time when you are waiting for the results of a biopsy. You have not had any sort of diagnosis yet, so try not to be too concerned and take note of your doctors words about the statistics. Don't spend too much time researching the possible causes on the internet, as this will just worry you more. Be reassured that because you have gone to your doctor and taken positive action to find out what the problem is, then whatever the result of the biopsy, you will have given yourself the best possible chance. If the result of the biopsy is what you fear, then because you have had this looked at so promptly, you will have increased your chances of successful treatment.
