I have just been on the telephone to the British Dental Health Foundation (0870 770 4014) regarding blue ribbons. They can be bought in packs of ten for 8.00!! I asked if it was possible for us to make our own to raise funds and the answer was NO. The blue ribbon logo is registered to them.

I think it is going to be prohibitive to buy in bulk from them. Not allowing us to make our own in bulk seems to defeat the original objective.

There is nothing to stop us making them and giving them to all and sundry just to raise awareness and making our own donation...?

I have requested an information pack, which is free, so anyone else wishing to do that can ring them on the above number.

Any comments please?

Well can we pick another color then???????????Does it have to be blue? Talked with my Dcotor today in CALIFORNIA and they are next year in APRIL going to do a FREE WEEK of ENT check-ups for ORAL CANCER at the UCI IRVING. He is in with another doctor on the west cost. I will get more info as he his going to email me all the facts. I told him about the BLUE ribbons, he thought that was a GREAT idea..Tho we would need some help like be able to set them in his office and at Grocery stores. THat is how we do it here in the STATES anyway. You pay like 50 cents or a dollar and you get a ribbon along with making the donation to the oral cancer foundation. He wants me to be there next APRIL to show people what ORAL CANCER can do and how it can be reparred.......SO maybe we need to get a different color. MS is Green, Pink, breast cancer. yellow is destress, how about red. I thought last night about lips.....yes lips...it is oral cancer....lips are the mouth.....I know..I was on a roll last night...Let me know okay...A.S.A.P. Vicki Lynn

Thanks Dr J - you have really done your homework! Do you ever sleep???!

Going ahead regardless. I'm off to buy miles of pale blue ribbon and dragging everyone in off the street to make them!

My hobby (since this illness) is card making and I am looking into designing a Christmas card to be printed to raise funds for Oral cancer research. Again time is of the essence but will report back when I have some info. x

Hello there,

Having visited the forum to make a post about possible mouth cancer case studies I was surprised to see our policy on the Campaign Blue Ribbon being discussed in this way.

I am sorry you feel that we are acting unreasonably by selling the ribbons but please let me explain our reasoning.

As you know, we co-ordinate the annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Week campaign and send out a completely free information guide to people who are interested in raising awareness.

The writing, designing and printing of this free guide costs us thousands of pounds, and this year we have sent out more than 23,000 of them! Of course this is a service that we are more than happy to provide, and as co-ordinators of the week we feel that it is our duty.

However, as a small charity that receives no government funding it places an enormous strain on our resources. It is for this reason that we sell the campaign ribbon. The money generated by the sale of the ribbon and other resources such as books, leaflets and CD-ROMs comes nowhere near covering our costs, but without it we could not afford to provide the free information guide.

I know that your main objection to the ribbons is cost, as you were looking to buy in bulk. Unfortunately this year we bought a relatively small number of ribbons as it was expected that they would be sold to dentists in small numbers. Next year the ribbon will be purchased in larger numbers as the week will be expanded.

We recognise that like us you are doing your best to raise awareness of mouth cancer and are delighted to see people working so hard to achieve this. We hope that in future years we will be able to work together, and that by using our bulk buying powers we will be able to provide local initiatives with ribbons at a more reasonable rate than they would be able to buy them themselves.

Yours Sincerely,
Leigh Greenwood
