This is the first time that I have made contact. Whilst I was only diagnosed 8 months ago, I have gone through a number of operations and now finished my radiotherapy, Still got a sore and dry mouth, eating a little by mouth but otherwise by peg. I do have grown up children but was divorced 14 years ago so now very much on my own and without a voice likely to remain so. I have been through a lot but just cant see the future!

Hi Novoice, one good thing - at least you've finished your radiotherapy. That's got to be a plus. Have you been told that for sure you'll not be able to speak again? I was told that it would be unlikely that I'd be able to speak after surgery. Well I can, of course it's nothing like before surgery but in general I can make myself understood. It'll be tough being by yourself and trying to rebuild your life. But I'm sure there'll be some sort of support group that you could contact or failing that try talking to a MacMillan Nurse - great people. Whatever don't stop trying think of all the work the surgeons, nurses, radiologists indeed all involved in your treatment put into your survival. Don't let them down. Please do keep in touch thru' this message board.

Hello Novoice and welcome. You certainly do have a future. Those of us who have encountered cancer have certainly not been to hell and back not see a future. You have come through the horrible part - so you can have a future its all yours. At the moment you will still be feeling the after effects of Radiotherapy, this will take a long time to get over, but you will. Sorry cannot comment on the speech part. Pikeman is spot on there. Make your feelings and fears known to your family, Im sure they would want to know and help you deal with this traumatic phase in your life. Just keep your chin up, Take care Rosemary

Hello Novice. Welcome to the group. A great morale booster. Honestly! There, you are in a new club already. I see that you are posting from London. Well every area has its own Laryngectomee Club where people who have lost their voice boxes for whatever reason, meet and have a great time. They help each other with all the problems they share. And they often meet new partners I read in their5 newsletter. I don't go because I have my voice, albeit croaky at times when stressed. But I know lots of the local people in my town. They always have a stall in aid of Bacup at the local fetes. Perhaps you can't get up and about yet but they ferry each other around. And come from every walk of life. I have been through the radiotherapy bit 5 years ago and my throat is far from normal. But I feel fine, and you will too. Give it time. Regards Ishbel
