I know you Brit lot have an awkwardly named (to me, anyway) 'Mothering Sunday' that usually doesn't coincide with the US Mother's Day, but the sentiment is the same. I'm glad to be here, healthy and happy after another year and wish the same for all the other Moms and Mums out there. (Sharifah! I looked into the Bahasa-Malay Dictionary for a translation but they required a payment! Am not leaving you out sweetheart, but am sure that the translation is either Mum, Mom, Mam, Ma or Mama.)
In 2005 I was diagnosed with breast cancer the Friday before Mother's Day. I was to meet my daughter and s-i-l for brunch on Sunday and thought it wouldn't be appropriate to hear "Happy Mother's Day!" only to reply, "Well, thanks! Guess what! I have cancer." I waited until Monday after my daughter got home from work, called her and said, "Be sure you're sitting down..." After clueing her in on what was going on, there was a long silence followed by, "I wondered why you were so insistent upon having our picture taken together yesterday." I, of course, was convinced that I'd never see another Mother's Day. Time goes by; one cancer is in remission and then the next one pops up, this one that is also in remission. Right now I'm the fortunate one but I know that can change at any moment. To all the Moms who have or have had cancer, to those who are the parents of someone with cancer, to those with cancer who are or are loved by Moms, to those spouses who love a Mom, to those who might even be Mr. Mom, to step-moms and those who wanted to be Moms but the biology didn't work, to those who married late in life - my best to you on the day that honors you. Even if you have a Mom that you despise (lord knows, there are plenty of those), you can at least hope you don't inherit any of her genetic traits on this day. Tomorrow I'll think of Deb and Bell, our Moms in crisis. Love to all, Mimi Whoops! Forgot one more category! Our lurkers. Love to you too! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mimi McC, |

HI Mimi
This was a lovely post, as always from you. Aren't we so naive about cancer until we've lived amongst it? I'm referring to your belief that Mother's Day 2005 was to be your last. I'm so happy that it wasn't and that you are able to share your experience and wisdom with all (lurkers included). It's great for people to see that life is not necessarily over just because you have cancer. It may never be the same, but that's not always a bad thing either. I hope your you celebrated up a storm Mimi. Much love Deborah |
