Hey guys!
You should try "proper" food whenever you feel able to tolerate it. Everyone's different. I went without any real food for 3 months because of the sores and lak of saliva.
As the sores began to heal i then tryed ice cream and custard (not together *lol*) and milk shakes. Mash & gravy. Rice pudding. & i lived on soups! There are some good tips here.
Just go with what your body tells you.

Hi Dave & Sue

I don't reckon there is any set time, the old fortisips are a life saver they are real food if you can get 8 down a day you are getting around 2400 cals. I drank them because all food tasted like salt and they were easy to drink, still using one or two day to boost the cals.

Some of the Covent Garden soups are good, the chicken soup has around 500 cals add marscapone cheese or other cheese to boost the cals. ReadyBrek with full fat milk and cream (loads of honey) is easy on the mouth.

If your mouth is bad you might try a little Oramorph with water before trying to eat.

Regards

Tony

I personally went through gallon of the best ice cream I could find as my mouth was so sore, But did not put on weight but now I am eating food chopped , minced again I am putting weight back on. I dont know if you guys find at different times the food tastes different sometimes sweet, acid or very salty!

Hi,
All the things mentioned on this site are good to try. I found sweet things the best Creme Caramel. rice pud etc Yoghurts still taste yuk!
My best meal of the day is breakfast. Porridge made with soya milk topped with manuka honey(good for throats) and sultanas.
Do keep trying to eat something evreyday as your swallow will not be too good if you leave it too long.

I find that too Paul!
Some days i can't even eat tomatoes because if the acidty. & then other days they're a life saver because of the moisture!
Some days things just taste of pure sugar, and some days like the sea!
I find cherry yoghurts to have the most "true" taste.

I'm with Anne on the porridge and manuka honey. I have Ready Brek with ull fat milk and a table sponn of the honey. It's also great for the heart burn i suffer with (too much vommiting).
I also agree with her comment about trying to eat somethingh every day. When i started to eat again my swallow was SO tight. I don't think you HAVE to wait until you're told by a dietician you can eat again. It's just that when you see them again they can help you out with the weight gain.
If you feel you can manage soft creamy foods you should give it a go.
Michelle

Hi All

It took me a 2 to 3 of weeks after treatment. Kathy kept a log of what I ate or drank everyday, I had to force the bl**dy things down

The fortisip I liked (not sure if liked is the right word) was the strawberry flavour for some strange reason.

Paul hit the nail on the head the old taste buds do seem to change from day to day, beer taste like (better not swear).

Late last night fancied some peanut butter, I will not be making that mistake in a hurry again I could not get it to go down it took 4 cups of tea to remove the dam stuff.

Nice warm croissant full of lovely cals and you can dunk then in your tea or coffee.

Dropped 16 kgs during treatment and have put 10 kg back on in 7 weeks

Regards

Tony

Hi Davis,

Initially only try really moist soft food. I never can stand the things normally, but I lived on packet supernoodles & pasta in cheese sauce for months, as these were easy to make & slipped down easily. AS you gewt onto more solid foods then just eat what your tastebads will let you, and don't be surprised if you can't stand a lot of your favourites. I still use loads mopre fat in my diet (butter, sour cream, ice cream etc)than I used to as it helps the food to go down.

Hi Dave and Sue. I put everything I ate through a blender and managed to put weight on right through my RT. I followed everything with ice cream and ate lots of small meals a day. I figured the only way to get better was to gain strength. It worked for me. Good luck.

It used to take me a good hour to get thru my porridge.I felt like I'd run a marathon! Worth the trouble because you are getting calories and nutrients. I also used to add procal for extra protein and calories (available on prescription from your dietician) You can add it to anything hot to give you xtra oomph! Good in hot chocolate before you go to bed.
I still use it now if I feel as though I haven't had a good eating day.
