hi ron, the swallowing thing is difficult. it is more tha i have a phobia about having a dry tongue, or someone drying it with a cloth, i know it sounds really weird. also you need your tongue to swallow right, well if it is stuck out of your mouth for 5 minutes dont you get a build of saliva??? or do they have a nurse with a vacum like the dentist. Anyway, i will soon find out. sally

Sally, Tell your doctor about your concerns. If you need to swallow I'm sure you can take a short break. Five minutes seems like too long for this procedure. Think of it more like removing a thorn, or trimming a cuticle. It hurts, but as a procedure it is not that big of a deal. You've come to the wrong place to complain about too much saliva. Most of us are post-radiation treatments that wiped out most our salivary glands and we can't even lick envelopes. Sorry if that plays into your dry tongue phobia. We'll all hope your test is negative and that your dry tongue phobia does not become a premonition of the dry mouth that we deal with daily.

hi ron, thanks for all your advice i think it helped me a lot yesterday. The injection in the tongue i coped with quite well thanks to your warning. I found the rest of the procedure very uncomfortable but not to painful. i cant bring myself to eat anything though so i am starving at the moment. i get the results in 3 weeks, the doctor said he is pretty certain it is nothing to be concerned about. Thanks again ron and i hope things improve for you. sally x

THREE WEEKS!?! To wait for biopsy results? That's worse than the torture on your tongue! I had to wait five days, and that drove me crazy. On my tonsil biopsy, the doctor called me the same day. Garance has the right advice, but I would not be capable of that kind of philosophic patience. I'm one of those high-maintenance, demanding patients who wants to know the results when I get a biopsy.

hi ron and garance, The doctor said was almost convienced that it was not cancer therefore there was no rush, but even with his experienced view obviously i still have a nagging worry. i couldn't eat for about 36 hours, then managed to eat some food like soup and readybrek. feeling a lot better today with the help of painkillers. Thanks again for your support guys, will let you know when results are in. sally x

Hi Sally I saw seven Docs, before No 7 took a biopsy, and said he wanted me in the scanner in under 30 minutes, then report back at 9.30, next day, then I was told I had the classic cancer of the heavy smoker and spirits drinker, for non smoker a bit of a shock; so try to insist on a quick answer, so that you can set your mind at rest, and remember every illness holds a lesson for us. Big Bear Healing Hugs, and lets hope you get a fast negative !

hi garance, i have just been reading some of your previous post and feel like a complete idiot, winging about a tongue biopsy with all that you have been through. Also i am a 29 year old smoker and for you to have to go through all this and you haven't smoked well life is a b**ch. How come it took seven doctors before they took you seriously, what symptoms were you presenting?? sally x

Hi Sally, they all thought it was an abcess on the tonsils and gave me antibiotics, that is until I could hardly breathe and could only eat icecream. Well you never know what is out there, re smoking, I always hated it as my mother smoked when I was small, so I took an early dislike, and never could go into pubs, as I used to have terrible headaches and my nose would run like a tap. Well how are you doing, do keep us well posted. B>B>Hugs

hi garance/ron i got the results back today, i was given the all clear, but told smoking was the cause and should give up now. I am so releived, and also grateful to you both for your support, hope things are ok with you guys, keep me posted. sally x

Sally, What a relief. Congrats. Good advice about not smoking. Don't mean to sound like a big baby, but I've had cancer and its no fun.

I had awful problems with Dry Mouth since completing treatment for base of tongue cancer in July 2010. Constant drinking, gels, sprays and synthetic saliva’ 24/7/ became unbearable. I found in the US a Colonel Richard Niemtzow who discovered, developed and still practices his Dry Mouth treatment in Maryland.USA. He also created battlefield acupuncture and is the world renowned authority on these treatments. I exhausted places in the UK to be treated with his protocol. so visited him July 9th, 2011 and within the first of only two sessions was able to produce saliva again. No more gels, sprays and synthetic saliva since this date and unbroken sleep since. I was profoundly affected at the results of the treatment so started in the UK The Dry Mouth Foundation. www.drymouthfoundation.org. but you could visit the colonel via his website www.n5ev.com Let me know how you get on.
