A work friend of mine has just been diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid. As you can imagine she is a bit all over the place at the moment especially as she found a new lump yesterday whilst at work. So I don't have to read through everyones stories, does anyone know whose story on here relates to thyroid cancer?

Thanks

Lorraine

Thanks Dr Joshi. My friend Fiona has now also read Ruth's story and found it helpful. She's having her op this Thursday so fingers crossed for her and I'll be buying her some Bio Oil!

Thyroid Cancer Treatment May Be Overly Aggressive
quote:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 01 - Clinically insignificant thyroid cancer may be managed too aggressively in some patients, according to a lecture published in the July issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. (Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 2007;133:639-643.)

In his lecture, Dr. Heller concludes: "We have embarked on a quixotic quest to rid our patients of microscopic and probably clinically unimportant thyroid cancer. We need to refocus our efforts, not to detect more occult disease, but to identify and cure those few patients whose disease is likely to shorten their lives."

I don't really know a lot of information regarding Fiona's diagnosis but she did tell me that the primary lump was 5cm, which seemed rather large to me? It was this lump that was attached to her thyroid. The consultants did seem to want to get things done quickly so I would like to think that they did what was necessary, especially as she is going to be left with a large visible scar.
