My father has just had his first Chem and RT - chem took 6 1/2 hours - so far so good as it is very early - they gave him anti nausea medicine and he seems fine but he seems to get the hiccups - more annoying than painful - did anyone else get them? I know they are one of those funny bodily functions but just thought I would ask.

We are learning more and more every day. Iam so very thankful for all of the support to this board as I am new hear and the process/treatments are very new for my father. He lives alone - I am close by and trying to be helpful but not intrusive. He is very independant and has an amazingly positive attitude!!

While I feel my question might be silly I know there are no silly questions. And I know we are just starting I will have so many more - so thanks to all for all the posts as lurking through them have been very helpful to me!!!!

Hi, Helping!

If he's able, have him lie down. The idea is to completely relax the diaphram. After a few deep breaths, have him hold his breath as long as is comfortable, remembering to keep the body relaxed. Slowly release and repeat until hiccups are gone. Works for all but the drunkest hiccups.

I looked up the side effects of 5FU and Cisplatin and neither list hiccups. Scott Hamilton (remember him? Olympics skating champ who later had cancer?) has a terrific website that lists all chemo drugs, information about each and possible side effects.

Remember the story a few years ago about the guy who had hiccups for sixty years? Yikes!

Hiccups

Best of luck to your dad and family.

Thanks so much for the info - the docs gave my dad a "heavy duty" anit nausea med and then a "light" one - the light seems to take care of hiccups in less than ten minutes - so all is well Smiler He souded a bit tired today but trucks on with the biggest smile Big Grin

A few years ago my brother got the hiccups and had then for about 6 weeks - there were very "hard" hiccups!! Banghead he was in so much pain - it hurt to hear to hear try and talk - we think he had an alergic reaction because he was painting his house but we may never know - hiccips are just one of those funny bodily functions!!
