I am delighted to join this very informative site. I was diagnosed with squamous cancer tumor on the base of the tongue on 4 June 2004. Operation to remove tumor carried out on 21 June 2004. 30 doses of radiotherapy considered most suitable follow up therapy commenced 12 August 2004.

It is now 6 weeks since cessation of my radiotherapy sessions and I guess I have gone through a number of the experiences following therapy as have others.

My situation to date is: my tongue is sore but hardly so and appears less sore with time. I get chest sweaty on occasions and a dry mouth also on occasions. Quite often feel a little sickly.

My worst burden is lack of taste for solids (which taste like saturated cardboard!). I have difficulty in maintaining my weight for which I take 3 x Scandishake drinks per day (1800 cals). I try to supplement this with porridge.

Recently, I had 4 solid days of feeling very well but now returned to situ as above.

Visiting my specialist after the first month's 'follow-up' visit he said he was pleased with me and thought I was about 3 weeks ahead of normal post-radio recovery - whatever that means!

My main query: How long before the effects of the radiotherapy wear off? Is there a 'normal' period for recovery? How should I rate my progress given the symptoms I have described? I hope this note is not too verbose. I am 72 years of age on 6 December, 2004
