Hi David and Susan

Know exactly what you are both going through - well know what Susan's going through

I cried bucket loads because Tony was so down, everything had been knocked out of him. Like you David he had constant phlegm, couldn't sleep, couldn't eat - even the Fortisips were difficult to get down. However, 6 weeks post r/t and things have improved a great deal. The phlegm has gone, he is sleeping a little better and is eating a wide variety of food. We went out for our first meal last Saturday and it was fantastic just to feel somewhere near normal again.

David youv'e just got to keep thinking that in little over a week's time when the r/t has peaked things will start easing up a little.

Hi Kathleen

David has just showed me your reply, thankyou for your quick response it is much appreciated. I agree it is hard seeing your husband going such an ordeal and feeling helpless at times.

One of the things we are looking forward to is going out for a meal also and from your comments it will hopefully only be a few weeks.

Thanks

Susan

It's OK to feel down David! You're more than entitled to!
I know how distressing it is to feel so sick when you're out. My bucket came everywhere with me for 3 months! I went to the park to walk the dog with my partner and was sick 4 times (no bucket) & i was SO embaressed! & then the anxiety of "maybe" being sick made me even worse!
It HONESTLY does get better. There were days when i really felt i'd be stuck this way forever and never get my life back! But i have!
Don't dispair guys! It just takes time!
Thinking of you both.

My new latest problem with Robin 14 days post radiotherapy is his despair.I think when you finish treatment you cant imagine it will take so long to pick up.Roobin is just like you, sleeps no more tha 1-2 hours at a time because of the horrific gunge he is producing in huge quantities. We have slept in separate rooms for weeks now because he needs the heating on all the time, and because i need to sleep to help him during the day.I am struggling to find ways of keeping him upbeat, and it is very hard .Dont despair there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if it is as long as the channel tunnel!!

That's definately the right attitude Liz!
Amir and I slept in seperate ooms until about 4 weeks ago because my sleep was all over the place. & then we had seperate duvets because the feather one weighed my irritable legs too much.
We all expect too much when we finnish treatment and become frustrated with progress. & it for me was after treatment the whole experience caught up with me! Until that point i had focus and was up beat and cheerful. & then all of a sudden you're kind of left hanging. You see someone every day through R/T and then they're all gone!
You'll all get there though. & it really is ok to feel down about it. You can still "be positive" and have bad days!

Hi everyone

Sue here Dave's thanks for all you support and comments.

We are having a bad time tonight Dave has started to be sick, brought everthing up he has taken today, and now he is bringing up bile, he is feeling terrible, it just the same situation as when he had a reation to the chemo, is this a reaction to the RT and how long will it last. When we spoke to the nurse on Monday when Dave got weighed they said he still had not peaked from the RT is this what she meant.

I would be grateful for any tips to help get him over this.

Sue

When they say the R/T hasn't peaked they mean all the side effects from it. i.e. ulcers, burns etc. I liken it to when you microwave something and take it put it carrys on cooking for a few minutes.
I don't know if his sickness is related to the R/T.
All i can say is i continued to be sick for about 12 weeks after R/T. I think for me it was a combination of anxiety, my stomach shrinking and not managing the feeds very well.
Ashamed
I didn't stop being sick until after a really dark and miserable sunday of throwing up constantly all day i was admitted to hospital, weighing 6stone 10lb, malnourished and dehydrated.
The sickness stopped gradualy.
I kno how awful you're both feeling right now. The constant sickness is soul destroying and doesn't do the ulcers any favours!
Dave shouldn't let it get as bad as i did Sue.
Make him see a dr.

This post HERE may help both Dave & Robin with the phlegm?

I finished 6 weeks of daily R/T last November. From memory things started improving from about 2 weeks after treatment finished.

I never had any sickness with R/T (although I did with chemo) so looks like I was very lucky.

Dave & Robin - It will get better, quite quickly once you've turned the corner.

Your experience sounds very similar to my own.Have you tried sleeping propped against a few raised pillows? Also using a nebuliser is a good option.During my stay in hospital I found it assisted my breathing a great deal.My only wish is I had it at home.As with most of the side effects of RT this will pass.Just stay in there

Tony never had the sicknes, but a couple of days after finishing r/t he had it coming out the other end! This went on for nearly 10 days before he saw a doc - he was admitted to hospital dehydrated and malnourished. They thought this could have been caused by he Fortisips.

Like Chelle says don't leave it see a doc.

Hi everyone Sue here

Thank you all for you reply, sorry I did not respond earlier but early hours of Friday morning I took Dave into hospital. They put him on a drip and gave him morphine for the pain, the hospital got him stable yesterday and let him home today, but with an open door policy, if he start to have problems with taking in water to take him straight back.

Thanks once again for your help.

Looking forward to meeting you at the walk in October.

Sue
