I'm a little weepy tonight; laurel's post (Help please, sinking...) and a few others have really done me in. I guess we're entitled to wipe off that stupid "I'm OK...really I am," grin off our faces every so often. *

Wiki article - Babe Ruth

You don't necessarily have to be American to have heard of Babe Ruth - he's our baseball legend and hero who for the most part lived up to the hype. He had a record setting 60 home runs in one season, a record that stood for 34 years. To many people of my parents' generation, he was second only to Franklin D. Roosevelt in popularity.

Babe Ruth was cancer research guinea pig

quote:
.....He died on August 16, 1948, at age 53, by most accounts of throat cancer, brought on at least in part by a well-chronicled fondness for tobacco and liquor. But that's all wrong, says a Westchester County, N.Y., dentist with a passion for baseball history. And he's trying to set the record straight.

Dr. William Maloney spent a year researching the circumstances of Ruth's death, and the information he revealed in July's Journal of the American Dental Association about the Bambino's last days came as a surprise even to Ruth's closest living relative.

<snip>

Maloney uncovered little-known information about the experimental treatment that the doomed baseball titan agreed to take part in, the kindness Ruth showed toward medical staff during his difficult final days and the rare form of cancer he actually died from, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (it causes less than 1 percent of the cancer deaths in the U.S. today).

<snip>

"They completely skip over his illness, and they got it all wrong," Maloney says. "They all said he had throat cancer -- an easy conclusion because he was well-known for drinking, smoking and using tobacco. In fact, he died of a very rare cancer. And what I found out was that this larger-than-life celebrity was a pioneer in early cancer research."

Ruth agreed to take part in an experimental drug trial, one that had never been tried on humans. A number of doctors warned against it in an age when medical experimentation was far less regulated.

Geez. I miss my Dad tonight and wish he were here to discuss Babe Ruth, the Olympics and the '08 election.

* This reminded me of a quote I saved from my breast cancer message board.

I picture this as written by a Texas woman, big hair and all, bless her little Baptist heart.

"Oh honey, this is Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the same as war veterans have. When all the fuss is over, you stop holding your breath and smiling till your teeth dry out, all the hullabaloo is over and BANG! Down you go like a pole-axed steer. This is so common, we need to publish a pamphlet.

Treatment is over, everyone says bye, your family says, good for you! BUT, you are still in a very dark hole, but now you feel alone. The squirrels run around the room at nite."

Tonight is one of those squirrel nights.

Still gets to me sometimes Mimi, and i'm 20months post treatment.
I think it definately gets easier as time passes. But i think it's important to stop once in a while and take stock of it all. It puts me in my place!

I had nasopharyngeal Ca, so your article on Babe Ruth was interesing to me, thanks.

All the best Mimi,
Michelle

Hi Mimi, some things trigger it for me now and again too, nature of the beast I guess. The quote from your post by the Texas women is so accurate. Hope you feel better soon. Hagg.

When I was still in the early stages of recovery I ignored my consultant's advice and starting looking for information about tongue cancer on the web. Somewhere I read that the 5 year survival rate was just 46%. I never forgot that and even now, four years on, I still get what I call my 46% days - days when I wonder if I am going to make it, even though I am doing well,days when I just want to cry for no real reason, but those days are getting rarer now. That's why this site is such a lifeline - just knowing there are so many people at various stages of going through what I've been through and who are willing to share their experience and advice means so much.

Hi Mimi, I burst into tears on hearing Jade Goody (one of our Z list celebrities) has cervical cancer on Monday. I don't know her and it's the opposite end of the body to my cancer but it still effected me. I guess it always will.
