Hi Pauline and Laurel, thanks for the responses. My doctor prescriped Diazapan for the nerves which really helped a lot. I was able to get through my radiation fine with it and am glad to say that I finished 3 1/2 weeks ago.

I never did try to lift up once the mask was on. Not because I didn't want to, but because the techs were very specific about staying very still at all times until I'm out of the machine.

Pauline, the pillow under the knees was great in helping with my back. I was also given a rubber ring to hold on to with both hands which helped as a bit of a stress reliever. I sqeezed the heck out of it!

Thanks again, Cricket

Good to hear it's all over now for you now bar the eating! Yes I think keeping still and just doing as told may the best option for a speedy getaway!
I was told to place my hands under my bottom and keep them out of the way.

Hello All

I refer you to 'Safer Radiotherapy' a report about the problem of radiotherapy safety in the United Kingdom from the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). One of the recommendations made in reference to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer patients is reproduced.
quote:

5.15 Communication with patients during treatment
Patients should be fully informed about the procedures they are to undergo and should have given consent before arrival at the treatment machine.

Some patients are particularly concerned about being alone and immobilised in the treatment room. It should be explained that closed circuit TV is used to observe patients closely and treatment can be suspended if they move or signal. There should be an agreed method of communication between patients and staff, which the patients should be made aware of before the first fraction. It is good practice for this information to also be detailed in written information given to the patient. This could involve raising a hand, speaking though a two-way intercom or an alarm button might be preferable, especially for those patients in head and neck immobilisation shells.

Recommendation
Patient communication with staff during treatment should be facilitated.

Best wishes
Vinod Coffee
