Hi All

I had surgery last monday on my tongue (partial glossectomy) and one of my tonsils removed. I have been doing ok with the pain up until last night/today. At the moment its terrbile (i would rate it at 8 on a 1 - 10 scale) The pain radiates all up the side of my tongue that was operated on, my throat, and my ear is aching /throbbing.
I have been taking the meds given to me by the hospital (paracetomal, and dyclofenac) but they seem to be having no effect. I have even thrown in some codine (from an old back injury) and tried mouth washes but no joy.

Has anyone got any tips that i could try, and how long did other patients pain last for after surgery? I guess i was hoping that after nearly a week the worst would be over!!

Hi newdaduk

Glad to hear you're over the surgery but sorry to know that you are having this pain now. It seems strange that you are having such severe pain now. The way you are describing it is how it felt after my tongue biopsy but I can honestly say that I didn't have much pain after the hemi-glossectomy. This was probably due to the fact that my mouth and face was numb for a good while afterwards. It certainly sounds like you need some stronger painkillers like solpadol or such like.

Hope things improve soon.

Hi Wendy,

I also thought it was strange that the pain was worse one week on compared to the first few days. My wife dragged me down the emergency GP center (as it was a sunday) and i was given a perscription for some Tramadol. What a difference! I had my first nights sleep in a week last night, and i can talk and eat again without too much pain, although it is still uncomfortable. They do make you feel a little bit "out of body" to start with though.

Thankss for the reply

Right on man - that's far out.

Seriously - glad they've done the trick!

Terry in Texas, I found a DR that understands opiate tolerance and helps you manage the break through pain and he really cares. I am sure you will find some one too. What part of Texas are you in?
