Before my diagnosis in Sept I ran about 2 times a week .A maximum of 5 miles but I enjoyed it.I was also a keen gym attendee.Recently after chemo and radiotherapy I was given the all clear and I want to resume my runnning a gym work.(no weights)The main issue is I have dropped in weight from 13.5 to 9.12 and I am worried that I may everdo do it. Any advice would be welcome ps after radiotherapy is it advisable to take saunas and spend time in steam rooms all the best Robert

Robert, I can't offer you any advoise on the running, as I was never a fitness buff. However I know there are some keen runners on this site, and I'm sure they will share their experiences with you. I know it has taken me over a year after combined radiotherapy & chemotherapy to be able to contemplate any sport, as all my joints and muscles ached constantly for ages. I think that this was due to the chemo, and reduced nutrition levels. I'm very dubious about the concept of a sauna or steam room after radiotherapy. The skin on my face is extremely sensitive after the radiotherapy, and I am finding that it is reacting to the cold weather we have been having recently and going very red. I also find that I get very flushed when I am cooking, especially when opening the oven door. So I would advise you to be cautious, and only spend a short time in the sauna initially, and to carefully monitor the effect on your skin. Glad to know you are feeling better, or at least well enough to pick up your old hobbies. I think that taking up, or returning to an outside interest is an essential first step in the recovery process. If you do take up your running again, maybe you could look at running in the MCF fund raising event next year. There are some pictures of this years event on the site that you can look at.

Hi Robert I kept running post op & during the first 4.5 of my 6 weeks of radiography, but slower & less often. Tail end of radiography & about 10 days afterwards rather defeated me from a running viewpoint! My weight went down from 11:00 to about 9:05, now up to 9:10. I wouldn't shy away from picking up running again, just run how you feel & don't worry if you have to walk on some runs. Apart from anything else, it should improve apetite which may help regain some weight. Also you'll be putting on muscle instead of flab, which has to be a good thing. Happy running! Dave
