Hi, everyone! I had total glossectomy 6 weeks ago. Fortunately, my oncologist said that I dont hv to go for rt or chemo because the cancer was in stage 2 and the tumour taken out had a clear margin. I hv been getting a lot of advice regarding food to be or not to be taken, of which some are contradictory. Many people have told me that I should not take eggs, red meat and chicken to prevent recurrence of cancer. However, my doctor said that I should eat anything I feel like eating. So, can someone please advise me on that?

I would eat whatever you can get down, do as your doc says

Hello sharifah, People seem to come out of the woodwork telling us about what we should and shouldn't be eating, drinking, etc. Unless they have valid statistics to back up their claims, ignore them and trust your doctors - they're the ones with the education and experience who don't pass on old wives' tales to already frightened patients. Sometimes I wish I could be spared from my friends' advice although I know they mean well. I lived and worked in Malaysia (PJ - Petaling Jaya) for a year in the late nineties and enjoyed every minute of it and hope to go back for a visit someday. I did notice that there was a certain reticence when talking about cancer and potentially fatal illness, as if it's a shameful topic. I hope you haven't encountered this and am glad you found this board. Best of luck to you, Mimi

Thanx Mimi and Carl for the prompt reply. I used to hesitate to even mention the word cancer. But now I would just say it out loud that I have cancer. I dont care if when there are people out there who turn their faces the other way. A lot of time they dont understand what Im saying. It can be quite embarassing but I dont let it get me down. I am eating well now and surprisingly enjoying the food as well. God is great. By the way Mimi, I used to study in the US myself from 1980 to 1986 in Illinois. Enjoyed being there very much and would like to go back there someday. Yeah. Very glad to have found this site.

sharifah, By any chance were you at SIUC (Southern Illinois University in Carbondale)? I never heard of that school until working in PJ and discovered that it's where our IT Manager graduated (a brilliant guy, BTW). I understand that there are several mid-Western colleges that have Malaysian student organizations and that SIUC is one of them. If you're from KL or the suburbs, it must have seemed like going to a Third World country - that has to be one of the least exciting places in the Western Hemisphere! Well, you got an initiation to small-town USA and I'm glad you survived it. I don't think I'd manage, listening to the corn and wheat rustle in the breezes. My coworker said that the Main Street Pig Out was one of the big festivals.... Sigh. I hope you got to travel - a lot! Best of luck to you my friend. Let us know how you're doing - I hope to go back to visit and who knows? We could get together too! Mimi

Hello Mimi, I did my first degree at Eastern illinois U in Charleston and proceeded to my master degree at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. I got to travel quite a lot when i was there. As to how I am doing, I just went for my follow up and the doctor said that I doing very well. I am just glad that I get to escape the rt and chemo which I understand is really dreadful. Yesterday, I managed to gobble on some noodle which i had been craving for. What about you? How are you doing? Hope we will get to meet someday? Bye, friend. sharifah
