I've read on a few posts thay those of you that have PEG's can spend any thing up to 8 hours feeding with them! Why? At max I'll spend an hour or 1 1/4 feeding on 2 litres of Jevity plus! Are you all using macines to pump this gunk into your bodies?

Hi alan. When first had to peg feed i was using one of those machines for about a month to start with. I could'nt sleep with the damn thing attached for the risk of turning and pulling it out. During the day i seemed to be stuck with it all day long. Eventually i chose to syringe my ensure through my peg at three intervals during the day, which although still a pain... is better than the machine.I did this for 3 months until the peg came out and i could eat again. In all fairness though i think it really depends on how weak you are as to wether you can perform the task of self feeding. I know at times i barely had the strength to get out the chair. What we have to go through eh! Still.....eating again now and taste is coming back. I'm grateful for that small pleasure. steve

Alan, interested to read that you can take 2 litres in roughly an hour or so. I don't know just what "Jevity Plus" comprises, is it a total feed or can you also yake some nutrition by mouth? My PEG feed is a product called "Fresubin Original Fibre" which is a total feed as I can't take any solid whatsoever. I very much doubt whether I could this stuff thru' a syringe. I do take the feed thru' a pump, and like HeathrowSteve I can't feed overnight (I've tried!!). I've found, by trial and error that I can only tolerate a feed rate of 265ml. per hour. My PEG intake is 1.5 litres per day (i.e. 1500 calories), leaving room for soup, ice cream, yoghurt or, best of all, a couple of of beers so you can do the math. yourself. If anybody out there has any suggestions for speeding-up my sort of feed I'd be interested to hear. Just for the record my PEG is for keeps.

Hi Pikeman, I have roughly four feeds a day, which last 'bout 20 mins each time which is 50ml flush, 400ml Jevity, 50 ml flush. Jevity plus is all inclusive, but I'm allowed to top up with what ever I choose ie: cupasoup,custard,yoghurt,ice-cream or any drink, plus I have the flavoured Ensure drinks. I only had the pump in hospital, butI made sure I was wired up at 5.00 every day and would be finished by around 12 noon. My calories where around 1800 ,but after bottoming at 10 stone they increased my intake to put some weight on! As for incresing flow I suggest tryimg the syringe and jug method as it's quicker!

Alan - thanks for that. I've got to say however that before trying syringe/bottle method I'll check with advisors. Regarding weight, I'd gone down to 8st., now steady at 12 & 1/2 stone. I've only just noticed you're in Redcar. Happy memories from my youth. All my mothers family were from a bit further north (Jarrow & Hebburn) but also had relations in Stockton from where I was taken on day trips to Redcar and (if I remember rightly) somewhere called Marsden. Finally, regarding your Latin bit, I think "fortitude" would be more appropriate than "strength" but my Latin isn't good enough, maybe "vires" covers both meanings?

Hi Pikeman, Can't see why the dietitian wont let you use the syringe method. Superstes per vires has several translations: Survival through strength Lifes Survivor The strong will survive The first is Chinese and gives meaning to warriors as a battle cry!

Hi Alan, well it's not that the dietician has deifintively said no to the syringe. It's rather that no such alternative method has ever been mentioned to me. I'll be posing the question at my next clinic. It's not really serious enough to warrant making a special issue of the matter. Apropos the Latin bit. The translation I'd previously seen was "Surviving through strength", but as I said my Latin isn't strong enough to really dispute any translation. Chinese origin ? Hmm, thats something I need to think about. Any of the translations mentioned seem muscular enough to Roman but not subtle enough to be Chinese.
