I am a nurse and I was looking for a site to get some information for a friend. I live in NC but friend lives in South Florida. She was just diagnosed with throat cancer and does not have health insurance. Her husband left her a number of years ago and she has a daughter that has not been supportive, She has been ill for a number of years with several chronic illnesses and has been weak and sickly for at least 10 years. She does not have friends due to her inability to function.Really has no support network and is scheduled for radiation and chemo for positive biopsy for throat cancer. Is there any organization that she can call on for support? They are going to put a feeding tube in and I understand her weight is way down. This is someone that I have not seen for many years but a friend of mine called me about her. Her friend wants to go to help her but has a serious back injury. I know this is an unusual request but I thought I would post it to see of anyone knows where she could receive support (emotional and financial) Does not qualify for Medicaid. Lives in the Western section of Palm Beach County Florida. Thank You Carolyn PS Her name is Gerrie.

Insurance Status Influences Stage at Diagnosis of Oropharyngeal Cancers

quote:
According to the results of two studies published in the journal Cancer, patients who have no health insurance or limited health insurance tend to be diagnosed with more advanced stages of breast and oropharyngeal cancer.

An estimated 20% of Americans under the age of 65 lack health insurance and many others have only limited insurance. A lack of health insurance has been linked with less access to preventive care, less timely receipt of care, and a lower likelihood of receiving recommended treatments.

Researchers involved with the oropharyngeal study looked at over 40,000 individuals who were reported to the National Cancer Data Base between 1996 and 2003. They reported that uninsured patients and patients on Medicaid were roughly 30% more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease than privately insured patients.[2]

The results confirm that lack of adequate health insurance can have important adverse effects on health. In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Richard Wender of the American Cancer Society and Thomas Jefferson University writes “Clearly, the issues of adequacy, availability, and affordability of coverage are serious problems that must be addressed collectively as we work to fix what is wrong with our health care system.

We're so lucky in this country that we dont have to deal with all this health insurance bo**ocks. All the best to your friend. She sounds like she needs a lot of support. Hagg.

Wish we could help your friend Carolyn, if I had the money I would help pay for her. The millions of dollars some people have wouldn't it be nice if we could arrange that they could help just one person like your friend!!!
Best of luck with it all, and I pray you get an answer to help your friend.

Ditto Hagg - it's bad enough having to deal with the illness, let alone having to deal with the financial aspects too.
We bemoan the NHS, but my oh my, they have done my mother proud.

Carolyn, Your care for your friend is admirable and I truly hope she is able to get the much needed assistance from somewhere.
