Doctors and grandmas always stressed on the multiple benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and the child. A recent study published in the journal- Archives of Internal Medicine confirmed the virtue of breastfeeding once again. The researchers have produced data to prove that breastfeeding a baby for even a few months can significantly reduce the breast cancer risk in high risk women. It stated that women with a genetic risk of breast cancer should be strongly encouraged to breastfeed. The women with BRCA1 and 2 gene mutations have a high lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. But pregnancy and childbirth can provide a protective shield against breast cancer for these women. Pregnancy and breast feeding can reduce genetic risk for breast cancer in women, who had their full time pregnancy before age 30. Breastfeeding becomes a more effective means for reducing breast cancer risks when the woman continues breastfeeding for 1 and ½ to 2 years. Contrarily, the genetic risk for breast cancer is higher for the women who never bore a baby, or had their first full-term pregnancy after age 30.
