Hi, I had surgery for cancer of tongue two years ago, followed by radiotherapy. Before surgery I had had full dentures for meny years. The hospital dentist made me new dentures but I cannot cope with the bottom ones. I have asked for implants but my dentist is concerned about the risk of osteoradionecrosis. I know ther is a 30% risk of problems with jaw bone but wonder if it is a risk worth taking. I am a 53 year old female and can't face the proaspect of not having bottom teeth for the rest of my life. Any advice or information from medics or anyone who has had similar experience would be welcome. Thanks. | |||

Hello SheilaC You need to find out from your radiation oncologist if the anterior mandible was in the field of irradiation. Most tongue cancers are at the lateral border or posterior tongue and the anterior mandible is spared. Two implants in the anterior mandible to retain a lower full denture when there is a loss of tongue control can make a big difference to your ability to wear one. Let me know how you get on.
