I'm in the U.K. and have been told by my chemist that Biotene gum and toothpaste are no longer available. Has anybody else had this problem and found a suitable alternative?

Hi Chris!

I remember seeing Biotene products sold on amazon.com and just checked to find it's also sold on amazon.co.uk under Health & Beauty. Also found it on ebay.co.uk. If you google biotine uk you can find a listing of sources. Perhaps your chemist knows of an impending closure or perhaps only his pharmacy chain is no longer selling it.

If you can't find any, send me a PM and we can figure some way of getting it to you.

Hi Chris,

I am still getting all my biotene products, toothpaste, mouth rinse, saliva replacement gel and mouth moisteriser on prescription and haven't heard that any of them will no longer be available.

I hope they don't become unavailable products because for me they are a life saver.

Hi Folks,
A very good alternative to Biotene is Bioxtra. They do mouth gel, toothpaste, chewing gum, mouth wash etc.

Website: www.bioxtra.be

Maybe they are both made by the same company ???

Regards
John

Laclede the manufacturers were only recently bought over by GSK. GSK has taken over the marketing and distribution so pharmacists might be not be aware of where to get it from as the former distributors don't supply it any longer.

Thanks everybody. I will try for supplies via GSK and also for alternative products from Bioxtra. Maybe it's a localised problem.

I find most other toothpastes far too strong tasting now and hope I can get supplies soon. Thanks Mimi for your offer. I'll come back to you, if I don't have any luck with GSK/Bioxtra.

Hope everybody had a great Bank Holiday.

All cancer patients are now eligible for free prescriptions.
quote:
Cancer patients will be able to apply for their exemption certificates for their free prescriptions from 1st April 2009. All cancer patients undergoing treatment for cancer, the effects of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment are now encouraged to apply for exemption certificates from their GP surgery or oncology clinics.

Exemption certificates last for 5 years (but can be reapplied for) and cover all prescriptions not just those relating to cancer - they must be countersigned by their GP, hospital doctor or service doctor.

For more information please visit the Department of Health website, www.dh.gov.uk/helpwithhealthcosts or call 0845 610 1112.

It would save so much money on biotene products!
Would i need to see my G.P. about this?

Hi Michelle

Yes you should be, I applied for Dave's certificate and he has been getting all his meds free since April 1st, which includes biotene replacement gel, bioxtra mouth rince and tooth paste. You can get a form from your local chemist or GP, hand it in to your GP surgery for your doctor to sign.

I preferred the biotene gentle mint gel toothpaste, but this has now been discontinued. I preffered this because the original flavour toothpaste was fritty and left lots of particles in my mouth. As I haven't got a lot of saliva it was difficult to get rid of these particles. Has anyone tried the sensitive biotene toothpaste, and if so is it a gel formula or a paste? I've tried lots of other toothpastes, but they are make a lot of foam, which is overwhelming when you have low saliva levels, and are also very strongly flavoured.
I wrote to biotene to ask why they had removed this product, but they said that since the take-over they don't have control of which products are retained, and gave me the email address of customer services for GSK.

I think it woulld be a great shame if biotene just became another toothpaste brand on the supermarket shelves and didn't retain the products that are essential to those of us with medical reasons for our dry mouths. I know biotene was at the MCF walk in 2007, so they are aware how important their products are to us, but should we try and raise our profile with GSK so that they understand why we need these products.

Also, i should mention that boots do their own dry mouth range. But i found the spray REALLY harsh! It really did sting. As did their mouth wash. My mouth is ultra sensitive to acidity though.
Jenni - i use Sensodyne Total Care F. Like you i find most toothpastes harsh and foamy, and i also cant stand the gritty texture. But sensodyne really balances my teeth. Especialy as even fruit juice feels as though it strips my enamel!
I really feel it if i have to use something else.
