John K Williams, my very good friend and mentor and our Consultant Orthodontist at Pinderfields, where he has worked since 1972, is in ICU at St James Hospital, Leeds. I went to see him last night. His family were there. John looked fined but was unconscious in a coma (5 on the scale). No intervention is planned Frowner .

It appears that he suffered a stroke this morning as he stepped out of his home to go to work. He fell as he lost consciousness and knocked his head causing a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage. He was discovered by the postman 2-3 hours later and admitted to ICU.

I stroked his hand, kissed his forehead and said my farewell to my friend as it appears there is no hope for recovery. I will miss his company in the clinics and in the consultants' room during lunch.

Your grieving
Vinod Frowner

Hello Dr Goshi--Please accept my condolences for losing your good friend in such sad circumstances. You must be finding it very difficult to work today in the knowledge that he will never be with you again in the closeness achieved in things shared.
He must have had great happiness and confidence in having a colleague with the wisdom you share with us.

That's so sad Vinod. I am so sorry to read this news. Friends who are mentors mean so much to us. We all have people who set us on aparticular path or way of thinking and we are grateful to them. I'm really sorry to hear there is no hope for someone who has given so much to his community.

What a lovely man you are to have stroked his hand and kissed his forehead. You must feel quite bereft.

Maybe when you are feeling less low you can explain about the scale of 5 coma. I just realised I know very little about comas apart from them not being good. I never knew there was a scale before.

Be kind to to yourself.

Kind wishes Pauline

Hi Ishbel and Pauline

JKW passed away yesterday. His final gift was to donate his organs. He was such a gentleman. I love him dearly and this very very, very sad news has been a shock to me. Still can't quite believe it, particularly so close to John's retirement.

I will remember John with great fondness - not least for his wry wit and many conversations we had about his motorbike (a 64 year old biker!), his church renovation, and holidays. He was found of posing puzzles to us in the coffee room. I always looked forward to our lunchtime banter. I will miss that cheeky look especially after he had said something controversial! He will be sadly missed.

Even though he wasn't a believer, he renovated a church! God bless him. Smiler

Vinod
