Oh Man,
My favourite subject!!!!!
Here in Cork (although I'm a 'blow in') we don't drink Guinness, we drink Murphys.
Brewed in Cork, slightly sweeter and a lot cheaper,no addatives and no hangover! Another one is Beamish, same taste and cheaper still!
OK. Not a good idea right! We all know the statistics of 'our' cancer and drinking and smoking.
Don't get the horrors here but I do have a glass every few days.
I'm still battling to put on some beef, I've stopped at 8st 2bls and I'm 5' 10". I am really not a nice sight naked!!
Part of my study is diet and nutrition and I've been rigourous in following the guidlines given for the food pyramid on top of still having a peg and taking 1 1/2 lites of Jevity every night and three bottles of Cubitan and four shots of Callogen during the day.
Did I put on weight? Not at all. I gained the 2lbs of the 8st 2lbs when I started on the Murphys!
Don't get into bad habits, don't over do it but for us skinnys a little now and again does help.
I'm lucky too where I can drink it and get the taste!
Cheers!

Hi all, it has been a long time since I have written in. I haven't had any alcohol since this 3rd bout with cancer, last July. Even before that it was rare, once every few months. Like Ananth, usually it was a social thing.
Susie, read yours response and was wondering about your peg tube. I have lost quite a bit of weight and have a hard time putting in all the stuff they want me to, makes me feel bloated. Now I am down to losing maybe 3 or 4 pounds a month. Which is not to bad I guess. I have weight to lose so I am not too concerned, but my doctors complain all the time that I need to use the tube more. I can eat some and try very hard to maintain what ability I have. I can take very little liquids by mouth because my vocal cords do not function correctly.
Anyways, any advice anyone has would be great.

On the side of drinking, I think I know a few people who could use a good stiff drink now and then. Especially those of you who put up with us cancer patients. I know my emotions are constantly up and down, so I can be a bit depressing at times. But then can't we all. I just tell myself to move on because the alternative to living this way or not living this way sucks.

Y'all have a great day.

Hi,

I used to feel really bloated when the peg was first fitted, espeicially when I was on the high fibre food. What I found was that the amount of water you put down the peg is really very important. Because we don't take much bulk into the intestines, the colon gets very sluggish, plus if you are dehydrated it stops working too, then your body takes the water from your gut and the waste food just stays there. I try to get at least 1 1/2 to 2 litres of water down the peg a day on top of what I manage to drink orally.
Yeah it's time consuming and you will pee alot, ha ha.
Another tip is this-Lie down and from your right hip bone run/stroke your hand up in a line to just under your rib cage in a circular motion, do the same across and under your rib cage and then down the left hand side. You don't need much pressure just enough to feel it. Don't go from left to right across the bottom of the stomach, just start from the right hand side again. Do it three to four times, twice a day.
What this is actually doing is following the, ascending, tranverse and desending colon. Without getting all medical, it helps the food move along and get rid of any stuff that isn't moving as it should.
If your'e finding it hard to get everything down the peg, try small amounts more often instead of in one go.
Do try to get it in, you really do need to get as much nourishment as possible.
If you loose too much it's so much harder to get it back on than what it is to loose it!
Hope this helps,
SusieR

P.S.
Forgot this bit - Try to include some live yoghurt in you diet every day too or a pro-biotic drink (thats if you are not sensitive to dairy products) Medication plays a big part in messing up the digestive system too. Your gut needs a certain amount if bacteria to function. Medication can kill off this bacteria, this then slows down digestion and waste slow to clear can start building up gasses which adds to bloating. Yoghurt and pro-biotics introduce the bacteria you need back into the system.
