I'm finding conflicting statements on the web about the role of saliva in taste. Some sources say you need saliva chemicals to break down food and prepare it for your taste buds, other sites say that's bunk because you can taste solid objects and taste buds are in the tongue.

After RT I noticed loss of taste that I thought was due to damage to my tongue, but the saliva theory makes more sense.
