Return of mouth cancer????

Hi Everyone

I had a tumour removed from my tongue and a neck dissection in October 2008. I was fortunate enough to not require any radiotherapy or follow up treatment other than my regular check ups. For about a year I have had a small white spot under my tongue which the Doctors put down to scar tissue but were keeping an eye on. It has recently got larger and at my last check up I have been referred for a biopsy on this area. Naturally, I am worried but just wondered if anyone else has had the same experience. I would love to hear from you.

Hello Louise

It is normal to get anxious when referred for a biopsy. Biopsies are done in order to catch things early so that there is the best possible outcome. So sometimes they are done on the off chance that something might be missed if not done. The white spot might just be a bit of hyperkeratosis that is best confirmed as such and nothing to worry about. If it has not got hard underneath and/or ulcerated, things are looking good. Hope that helps.

Best wishes
