Hello people. I wonder if anyone has any ideas about how to put on some muscles in my arms which are like very gnarled gateposts with all the weight which goes off and on al the time as Paul was saying.
I know it is a trivial matter but it would be something to focus my mind on rather than the scales and my overdraft.
My throat cancer has made all my jobs impossible. French tuition, local radio interviewing, market research. They all need a strong voice. So now I am in the bare bones of Income Suport and the dog is eating Chappie instead of Pedigree Chum!
So I will now think muscle building if my GP agrees.
Paul I think you will find that for the moment everything dairy, richer the better, will be your main standby. Greek yoghurt and honey etc. But they don't build my muscles up. I try to drink some soya as well to cut the chloresterol a bit.
Greetings from Ishbel

Hello Ishbel

I know exactly what you mean. The skin on my arms looked like the fatty tissue on a Turkey, it was awful. I bought some dumbbells (A tin of Beans would do the same) and at night would sit and watch t.v. exercising with the dumbbells. It does work.

Now I am trying to lose weight (No thats not quite true I am just happy the way I am).

By the way, you leave the tin of beans unopened..

Take care

Thank you for that advice Rosemary. Trust a Fifer to have the answers! I will start off with tins of Chum tomorrow. Not to eat----but to lift. My dog Sally is going to think I've finally flipped when she sees me!
I had been thinking of going to a gym but decided I wanted to do things at my own pace.
'Listening to the Archers' said daughter. Archly.
'No, practising to be one,' said I.
You arte lucky to be worried about putting on weight. I wish I could. But when you can't swallow bread and things it is very hard. I just seem to stick at just over 7 stone. The only good thing is that I can pick up come superb size 8 bargain model clothes in the charity shops!
I hope you are feeling well at the moment/ Regards Ishbel (originally from Banff)

Hello Ishbel, glad to be of help. Thank you, I am well. Had my bi-monthly visit to hospital the other day, everything normal, dont go back for another three months. I may need my throat stretched again at some point because of the scarring, but thats about all really. I can eat almost anything, just have to make sure I chew it properly before swallowing. Have had a few choking episodes, luckily only in the house.

I look the same now as I did before my illness, maybe about 7 lbs overweight, I put this down to not smoking any more. All the physical scars are inward. Cannot say I have a lot of mental scarring, I am too busy enjoying being normal again, although my family would disagree on that their comments I have never been normal. Oh well!!!!

Im not really a true Fifer, originally from Bonnie Dundee.

Take care

Rosemary

Hi people. Well.....like paul and a few others, i too lost a lot of weight from the onset of my cancer. For a year my weight plummeted and then seemed to bottom out. However....after 18 months i am just starting to fill out a little after gorging on anything sweet, fatty, and sickly..... providing i could chew it and digest it. So.... it does take time and i still feel and look thin, and i feel understrength too.....but ive been told i,m looking a little healthier, which is at least something. But its damn slow progress isnt it folks. People with regular appetites and taste have no idea...do they. Lets all keep trying.

Some people lose quite a bit of weight during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Whatever the cause, you will feel better and have more energy if you can get back up to a normal weight for your height and build.

There are different ways of approaching this. You can use ready made 'liquid meals' to supplement your diet. Or you can add try to eat a diet that is higher in calories. It is probably best to do a bit of both.

Hi Dr Joshie, What about tip son how to put on muscle when you have got to your required weight?
I need to know what type of food to eat and stop eating ALL the fattening things I have been eating( become addicted to anything sweet)
I must point out I have never eaten fruit of any kind my main downfall now is Creme Carmels & Ice cream.
Should I ask my Consultant to refer me to physo?

Hi there thanks for the invite, hope i can help with specific questions. I used to work with patients post surgery with upper GI cancer in my clinical dietitian days (2 years ago), but now I work for myself mainly advising bodybuilders.

so let's hope I can use both areas of my experience to help you folks.....

right in order to help more effectively, it's best if I help each of you one at a time. In order to help me not get confused Confused can you each start a new topic please and post your current 'typical' daily nutrition, whether your active, any exercise, weight history and brief clinical background. Include 'James' in your topic title.

I know this may sound like a complex way of advising, but for me it will be alot easier and more effective.

(Note my field is nutrition not exercise, but I have been bodybuilding for 16 years myself so I do have some exerice knowledge)

Hope I can help...... Smiler

It would be useful if memebrs would post here for advice so I can answer in public, this way others can learn from my advice. I get 100s of emails each day so look for ways of limiting them!

Afterall that's what these forums are for, and if we all emailled for advice there would be no forum!

If however, your condition needs to be 100% confidential, then I am happy to help through email. Smiler
