signs and symptoms of mouth cancer

Hi, I know you must get fed up of over-reacting people on here but I am really worried that i might have mouth cancer.
i dont really know a lot about the signs of it but i have a lump at the back of my mouth that has been there for about a month. it is not painful and is about the size of a pea at the moment and it has not changes size since i noticed it a month ago. the only other symptom i can think of is a decrease in apetite over the last few weeks but other than that i am fit and well.
the main reason i am woried is that my mother had mouth cancer when she was my age but i am not sure exactly what type as i am not it contact with her at all. i know i should get it checked out but im scared and i have a full time job so it would mean taking time off work which i really cant afford to do!
what other symptoms should i be looking out for?
any advise would be greatly apreciated thank you xx

Hi Niccie

One of the signs is any abnormality that doesn't heal in a couple of weeks. That you've had this for a month certainly would be a cause for concern. The loss of appetite is most likely unrelated and attributable to nerves (besides, if something in your mouth hurts, eating is one of the last things you want to do.)

I understand your being scared, but you really ought to have it looked at. Sure, it sucks to miss work, but the sooner this thing is looked at and taken care of, the sooner you'll be able to get on with your normal life and only miss work when you go on holiday. Please see your doctor, and take someone with you when you go.

I'll respond to your opening statement by private message, if you don't mind.

Julia
