My dad had the same problem and nothing worked.. He pureed most of his food but as time went on the dryness got worse.. He was using this stuff called Oasis which helped somewhat. Eating became very difficult and he had to have a peg put in.

Hello Jeff

The message board has a search function. Try using it, e.g. for the word 'peg' and you will find out what it is. Smiler

Best wishes

Hi jeffers

I have the same problem & very annoying it is. I've found some food is fine (eg Wheetabix, bananas) whereas other things (eg omlettes) can be guarranteed to stick & cause lots of coughing.

I find drinking milk before & during a meal can help; otherwise it is down to working out what is easy to eat.

I had a barium video fluoroscopy to check out problems with my voice, but this also showed that I now "pool" a fair amount in my throat. That means that I don't fully swallow everything. clearly what is left in my throat can then go the wrong way & make me choke/cough/etc.

Hope this helps.

Dave

thanx for replies everyone i found the link and understand a bit more now.

hi dave im having a barium this week. i found your advice useful and tried the milk before..... i am swallowing better now and the food seems to be going down better although at times it feels like a bit is stuck at back of throat....have been able to eat roast dinner today including roast potato....but i fear i may have over done it as im feeling a bit nauseous now....i think ill stick to liquidising and if i can manage solid i'll just have to cut down on amount Frowner

how long did the barium take as i read somewhere that you have to eat something and then go back a few hours later Eeker

take care and thanx

jeff

Just wondering if you ever tried the Slippery Elm powder I suggested a few weeks ago. Today in the natural health section of the Sunday Times Style magazine it was suggested as an aid in helping to soothe mucous membranes/digestive problems.
Obviously it's not the whole answer, but just something that has helped me when my tubes have felt uncomfortable.

Hi Jeffers

No waiting around when I did it. Sipped the barium & they did the video straight away.

I suspect the waiting bit is when they are x-raying further down the digestive tract - clearly they would have to wait for it to get there.

Good luck - Dave
