Hi Shelia

A bump of extra bone called a torus is present in the midline of the hard palate, it may be minimal or very enlarged. So, it could just be a normal structure, you have just noticed recently. Let us hope so.

For more information and pictures of normal appearances, please see Fig. 1.24 and Fig. 1.25 in this article called Examination Technique with Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease .

Hope that gives you something to reduce your worry. You must see your maxillofacial surgeon for a definitive diagnosis - it is never good to ignore anything in the mouth.

Best wishes

Thankyou for your kind words, and prayers,My gp examined my son and said that it didnt feel like bone and was not an abbsess, the lump is on the side of his hard palate(takeing up the whole of one side)And tonight i noticed that at the back of this (the soft palate)looked a whitish gray colour.sorry i have not replied to your kind words, but i have been dragged kicking and screeming into the 21 st century by my 9 yr old ,to get on the internet,(its great when a child has to show you what to do)he has been at cub camp so i had to wait for him to come home before i could get back on here, love shelia

Hi Shelia

It looks like you want to get a rapid referral to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon to determine what is! Let us hope it is only a cyst.

Best wishes
