Lump on Roof of Mouth
 Login/Join

Hi Doctor,

I have had a lump on roof of my mouth near the right side for quite a while...at LEAST two years. I have been to the dentist a couple of times and she has never mentioned anything about it. It's rather large and soft. I have really never thought about it and just thought it was a regular contour of my hard palate, but recently I've started to worry. It's painless and doesn't interrupt my swallowing or anything. I don't have any other swellings or suspicious symptoms, but I worry anyway. I don't think it's grown any in those two years. I may have had it longer but I don't know for certain.

I'm 25 year old female that doesn't smoke or drink. Please help shine some light on this. Thanks!

Hi Suzy508

It could just be the regular contour of the roof of your mouth, but it's best to err on the side of caution. You might want to ask your dentist or family doctor to give you a referral to an oral surgeon. Please have it checked out and let us know what's up.

I forgot to add that it's about the size of a large grape and feels the same way too. It feels like a water balloon. I haven't had my wisdom tooth out in that area yet either. My dentist has recommended getting it out, but I can't right now due to insurance.

Suzy,

Where in the US are you? My suggestion is to see an ent. That spot just doesn't look like it belongs. Even if nothing it shouldn't be there. It may just be some type of cyst. I have had two cysts removed, one on my face, one on my back side, and both were just fatty cysts nothing at all. I also have one on my liver but they aren't bothering with it.

Just to be on the safe side get it checked out.

So I had it checked out by another dentist and he balked at how big it was...he says he thinks it is an infected cyst and he drained it right then and there. Now I'm worried because he said that while he's 99% sure it's a peripaical cyst, he had to send some of it to be biopsied because it may or may not be malignant. I'm so scared. It's been there so long. Frowner
